Her mother told KIRO 7 that simply vanishing is not something her daughter would do.

On Tuesday morning, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said detectives conducted a detailed ground search near Chambers Creek Road West in University Place.

At about 2 p.m., detectives found human remains wrapped and disposed of over a steep hillside along Chambers Creek.

The recovered remains are believed to be Cantrell, pending official confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office.

After the discovery, a SWAT team arrested Cantrell’s 37-year-old ex-boyfriend at his Tacoma home. He will be booked into the Pierce County Jail on murder charges.

About an hour ago I spoke with Cantrell’s good friend (pictured below). She was kind enough to share these photos from their recent trip to Disneyland. This friend told me she was planning a Halloween-themed baby shower for Cantrell. She’s heartbroken.

The body of Kassandra Cantrell, a pregnant Parkland woman missing nearly a month, was found Tuesday over a cliff in University Place.

A Pierce County sheriff’s SWAT team arrested her 37-year-old ex-boyfriend at his Tacoma house hours after the discovery. He is expected to be booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Cantrell, 33, was last seen leaving her family’s home the morning of Aug. 25.

[..]

Just before noon Tuesday, the investigation led detectives to 64th Street West and Chambers Creek Road in University Place, where they found Cantrell’s body about 100 yards down a cliff.

Rescue crews used a high-angle ropes operation to recover the body.

“This is sad ending but this is the ending we expected,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. “At least now we can get closure for the family.”

[..]

When interviewed, he allegedly said he hadn’t seen Cantrell in years.

They seized his truck — the one he drove away from the parking garage where Cantrell’s car was found — and analyzed GPS data about where he had recently driven.

That led investigators Tuesday to search the area along Chambers Creek Road, where they found a woman’s body wrapped and tossed over a hillside.

[..]

Although the Sheriff’s Department believes it is Cantrell, the Medical Examiner’s Office will positively identify her after an autopsy.

Dudley was stoic as he sat in the courtroom while prosecutors asked the judge for 72 more hours to file charges against him. Volunteers who helped search for Cantrell sat in the audience. Some were emotional, and said they feel strongly that Dudley should also be charged with the murder of Cantrell's unborn baby. Family says she was about three months pregnant.

[...]

Cantrell's mother, Marie Smith, opted to skip today’s hearing, as she’s still trying to process the flood of new information that came with yesterday’s discovery of Kassanndra’s body, and Dudley’s arrest. “Her brother keeps asking why? There’s no why. He’s a bad person that’s all there was, there is no why…she literally wanted nothing from him.”

[...]

Dudley’s next scheduled court appearance is Friday afternoon where he’s expected to be formally charged.

“An autopsy found she had been stabbed and suffered skull fractures.“

...

Investigators say they discovered Dudley bought 50-gallon trash bags at a store the morning Cantrell went missing. They also found a text message he sent her that morning.

On the day Cantrell disappeared, Dudley turned his phone off and on and at one point dismantled the security cameras at his house, records say.

---
Cantrell found out she was pregnant July 16 and identified Dudley as the father to her obstetrician.

The doctor noted, “This pregnancy was not planned. Patient is feeling overwhelmed. FOB (father of baby) supportive of pregnancy, but not planning to be involved with raising child. He and mom are on good terms,” records say

TACOMA, Wash. — The ex-boyfriend of a Pierce County woman who was reported missing in late August has been charged with murder in connection with her death.

Colin Dudley, 37, appeared in court Friday and was charged with murder in the first degree. He is being held in the Pierce County Jail on $2 million bail, according to jail records.

Kassanndra Cantrell, 33, was reported missing on Aug. 27 after she missed a doctor's appointment the day before. Her vehicle was found abandoned near the Tacoma Dome the day after she was reported missing.

[..]

An autopsy by the Pierce County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the remains to be Cantrell through dental records, according to court documents released Friday.

The court documents revealed Cantrell discovered she was pregnant in July and told her doctors Dudley was the father. However, Dudley denied having any recent relationship with Cantrell to detectives, and said there was "no way" he was the father. He said they had dated several years ago.

Court documents said Cantrell's remains were too decomposed for experts to determine if she was pregnant or not during the autopsy, but her family, friends and medical records confirmed that she was pregnant.
