Plane carrying 72 passengers and 9 crew has crashed in Colombia

I'm also curious about where the survivors were seated. Marcos and Alan were seated together in gray seats. The seats to the left and right of them are blue, as seen on video taken on the flight. Marcos survived the crash but later died in the hospital. Alan survived with a spinal fracture. I would be willing to bet they were seated near the wings.

The two crew members and the journalist survived with the least amount of injuries. I would imagine the crew members were seated in the rear of the plane as they were landing, but from media reports the tail was destroyed. Odd. Perhaps they were in the cockpit (Edwin was a flight tech)?

I'm seeing the last picture shown as "purported" or "alleged". I don't know what it is, but it is not the plane the team was on, IMHO.

The plane that crashed had two aisles (seen in the videos), not one as shown in the photo in question.
 
I believe the team took another flight before this one and that is why you see different pictures.
Also, I read this airplane does not have any fuel dumping system.
CNN now also reporting that the crash might be due to running out of fuel.
One would almost hope it was a fuel leak, but I am afraid it is a bunch of human errors.

I just can't imagine why they decided to accept a holding pattern before landing when they were running out of fuel. There surely must be a low fuel warning going off? Maybe they were distracted by an electrical failure (probably due to low fuel) or something. I don't know.

Players, coaches and invited guests from Brazil's Chapecoense soccer team were on board the charter flight. Seventy-one people were killed and six survived.

Among the victims were around 20 journalists on the way to cover what was supposed to be a heartwarming chapter in a Cinderella story for a team of unlikely champions. The soccer club, which has risen the ranks in Brazilian soccer and has a devoted national fan base, was set to play in the first leg of the South American Cup finals Wednesday.

So apparently survivor Jakson Follmann was seated next to survivor Alan Ruschel, who was seated next to Marcos, who died at the hospital.

Ugh, never mind, Jakson wasn't seated next to Alan on this flight. Looking at a larger photo, it is clearly taken from a different airplane. MSM duped me, herpty derp. They don't even have his name correct, that is not Danilo. This must be a photo from the previous flight they took, thank you Sherlockh! Although since they were seated together on the other flight, it leads me to believe they were probably seated close together on this flight as well.

London (CNN)A heartbreaking video has surfaced on social media showing the moment Brazilian soccer player Tiago da Rocha Vieira Alves found out he was going to be a father, a week before he died in Tuesday's plane crash in Colombia.The clip captures several Chapecoense teammates delivering the news to the player, also known as "Tiaguinho", last Wednesday.
The video shows him embracing his fellow players and celebrating, later rocking his arms back and forth as if cradling a baby.

"His wife's pregnancy is a small miracle. It is a small part of Tiaguinho that stays behind with us. We are thankful," Marins said, adding that his wife, Graziele, is just over a month pregnant.
 
I couldn't find this interview in the English media (yet), but it is an interview with a crew member who was near the crashed plane and heard the last radio conversation between pilot and controller. It is chilling and it seems that the pilot was aware of the fuel problems but only declared an emergency at the very last second while being in a holding pattern before that. The bad luck was that another plane had requested landing priority due to some problem and therefore other planes had to wait.

Hmm..are we sure it was the larger two aisle airplane that crashed? I would think the charter plane would be smaller, and all the pics I can find of the inside of an Avro RJ85 only have one aisle.

I was basing it on the video shown, but after checking I believe you are right. It seems the video was from the earlier leg of the flight. Thank you!

Ruschel Instagrammed with his teammate, Danilo Padilha, while aboard the first leg of their trip -- before they got on the charter flight that crashed en route to Medellín, Colombia.

If I have it straight now, that means the woman we were talking about earlier (seated behind the two players) did not die in the crash (unless she was an invited guest and boarded the charter). I'd been trying to figure out who she might be, since all the journalists were male.

How did this happen? Why did they fly that particular plane when it didn't have the ability to carry enough fuel to get there and enough extra for an emergency? It's standard procedure for planes to fly with enough fuel to get to the destination and a surplus for an emergency. I don't understand why the pilot agreed to fly he must have known it was impossible to reach there destination with the amount of fuel on board with the pre-flight safety check.

The 1,900 mile flight path used by the doomed aircraft from Santa Cruz in Bolivia to Medellin was at edge of the jet's capacity, the Mirror reports.

The plane would ordinarily have needed to stop in Colombia's capital Bogota if it had run low on fuel. But the landing did not take place meaning the jet would have been very low on fuel as it approached Medellin.

Unless he miscalculated the fuel figure prior to departure. Up thread it mentioned the surviving F/A said they had run out of fuel.....I wonder how she would have known that. Another tragedy that didn't need to be. So so sad for these families.

I know air travel is extremely safe but it doesn't make any accidents and loss of life any less upsetting. Thank you to you and Jax49 for answering my question above.

I wonder why they chose not to refuel in Bogota and to try and make the journey was it to save time or financial reasons? I feel so sad for everyone who has died, the pilot desperately trying to save the plane and the survivors. It must have been a horrendous scene onboard the plane in its final minutes.

When the plane ran out of fuel would it have acted the way it would in a stall situation?
