READ IT: U.S. Military Issues Coronavirus Containment Plan Orders

Wow, I had no idea that this was going on as never mentioned on thread, and I have never seen in the media.

Great info, read it start to end, and so glad for this contribution to better understand.

They appear to have a plan in place, kudos! Hope it works out... as with the definition of Pandemic for WHO, this may be coming soon.

Seasonal flu? I don't think so. More serious than that. Cripes. There's a vaccine for the flu.

In an interview Thursday with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CDC Director Robert R. Redfield indicated he doesn't believe the coronavirus is going away soon.
"This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission," Redfield said. "You can start to think of it in the sense like seasonal flu."

I was just listening to a couple on the Diamond Princess. They are from Santa Clarita, California (they own and are reporting on their radio station). The wife mentioned they were receiving hate mail, people telling them to not come home! That's so wrong, they are still healthy as of today, and are testing many times. People can cruel.

MOO
Edited to mention they are on the cruise ship.

I've seen Ben and others affected speaking to this, and reminds me of the old saying which I go by... "what you say about me/others.. says more about you than it does me/others" iykwim.

Ignorance is widespread.. and we pick and chose when to address their ignorance, or just think "bless their heart" and move on. We see this in so many cases at WS when tro*ls get into the mix, and it takes a backbone to just... "dismiss" them.

Good for Ben and others that are doing so, and in the time that they have try to educate. BTW, Ben and his mom are going to be interviewed tomorrow post release from his 14 days.

Misinformation and fake news on social media during infectious disease outbreaks, including the current novel coronavirus epidemic, can cost lives, according to researchers.

About 40% of people in the UK believe at least one conspiracy theory of some kind, say the researchers from East Anglia University. The figures are even higher in the United States and other parts of the world.

False rumours on coronavirus could cost lives, say researchers

Legal Authorities for Isolation and Quarantine | Quarantine | CDC

Isolation and Quarantine
Isolation and quarantine help protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease.

  • Isolation separates sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.
  • Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.
In addition to serving as medical functions, isolation and quarantine also are “police power” functions, derived from the right of the state to take action affecting individuals for the benefit of society.

Federal Law
The federal government derives its authority for isolation and quarantine from the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S. Code § 264), the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to take measures to prevent the entry and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States and between states.

Federal isolation and quarantine are authorized for these communicable diseases
  • Cholera
  • Diphtheria
  • Infectious tuberculosis
  • Plague
  • Smallpox
  • Yellow fever
  • Viral hemorrhagic fevers
  • Severe acute respiratory syndromes
  • Flu that can cause a pandemic
Federal isolation and quarantine are authorized by Executive Order of the President. The President can revise this list by Executive Order.

Coronavirus UK: Cat owners urged to keep pets indoors

As the world scrambles to contain the epidemic, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has issued advice for all pet owners.

Dr Michael Lappin, chair of the WSAVA’s One Health Committee, has encouraged all cat owners to keep their pets indoors for the time being.

Agree as to UK/others believing conspiracy theories from , e.g. the Daily Mail header about "can pets catch coronavirus/keep pets indoors". Egads, what a disservice for the media MOO

The headline for that DM article doesn't even match the body of the article (typical MOO of DM). Salacious and misleading MOO headlines and unfounded. Makes me cringe. It seems to be analogous to the Enquirer in the United States?

Currently, six US bases are holding evacuees from China: March Air Reserve Base, Travis Air Force Base and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, all in California; Fort Carson in Colorado; Lackland Air Force Base in Texas; and Camp Ashland in Nebraska.

The US Defense Department announced last week that 11 more bases may be made available to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to quarantine more evacuees from China.

Sound familiar????

Back in 2017, a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore looked at that question. In the past, pathogens like Ebola and Zika virus were the most likely to alarm the public, but according to the research those pathogens are unlikely to cause a global pandemic disaster.

Instead, the report said that viruses that are spread through the air — including those like the common cold virus — pose the largest threat of becoming a pandemic.

The report suggests that in addition to the pathogen having to be airborne, it would need the following traits to truly be able to be a global pandemic/killer:

  • The pathogen would have to be contagious during the “incubation period,” or when people have only mild symptoms.
  • It would be a microbe that most people are not immune to, giving it a large population of susceptible hosts.
  • It wouldn’t have an existing treatment, vaccine or prevention method.
  • It would have a “low but significant” fatality rate — A pathogen with a high fatality rate could kill too many hosts too quickly, and therefore run out of people to spread it further.
The study claimed that a group of viruses known as RNA viruses have the highest likelihood of causing a global pandemic crisis. This includes viruses like the flu (influenza) and SARS, but also things like the common cold.

I really wonder if this ship will be commercially viable in the future who on Earth is going to want to go on a cruise on it now.
Might as well strip it down, rebuild it, and definitely rename it.

Right after the Gulf War flights overseas were reallllly cheap. I did it. Just saying. And after a bit, I would go on those ships as I feel that the virus would be gone and I would get a deal. :p
