Coronavirus - COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #22

Parents need to discipline their kids so that they are not all over town. I am a teacher in a district planning on closing and we are swamped with calls about child care and lunches. It is sad, but schools aren't day care centers.
This is why I’ve been less than enthusiastic about school closings. Kids will be out of school, but that doesn’t mean quarantined. Especially older kids. Even college students. I was looking at the site that starts w/R and college students were all kinds of excited to be out of school so they could go to Cabo or out to bars every night! Of course not all students think like that, but they’re probably not self-quarantining either. At this point I think everything, including schools, should close to try to get ahold of this. But I wish the right things were focused on from the beginning so we didn’t have to do this. :(

NYC teachers union calls on de Blasio to shut down schools as parents increasingly keep kids home

<snip> Amid growing coronavirus concerns, New York City’s teachers union as well as the union representing school administrators called on Friday for the country’s largest school system to close its doors in the face of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s strident opposition.

“We understand the immense disruption this will create for our families,” teachers union president Michael Mulgrew said in a statement. “But right now more than a million students and staff crisscross the city every day on their way to schools, putting themselves and others at risk of exposure and increasing the likelihood of bringing exposure into their homes and communities.”

The mayor said the city would “try its damnedest” to keep public schools open. But the Council speaker just called for them to shut.

“In a tweet, DPS said two members of a John H. Amesse Elementary School student’s family are among Colorado’s confirmed COVID-19 cases. Another tweet from the district noted that a parent of a student at Edison Elementary is a confirmed case.

The changes announced by the district were largely driven by evidence of community spread of COVID-19, the term used to describe the spread of the illness among people who have not been in contact with individuals who have traveled, said Dr. William Burman, director of Denver Public Health.

Burman said that the district’s efforts around social distancing will be part of a broader set of policies put in place for social distancing.”
