Arizona coronavirus update: 5,251 confirmed cases, 208 known deaths as of Tuesday

Arizona cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, now exceed 5,200, with 208 known deaths, according to new numbers released Tuesday by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Arizona's total identified cases rose to 5,251, according to the most recent state figures. That's an increase of 187 confirmed cases, or 3.7%, since Monday when the state reported 5,064 identified cases and 187 deaths.

Maricopa County's confirmed cases now exceed 2,700, according to state numbers. All of Arizona's 15 counties have reported at least two cases.

As of Tuesday morning, the state reported death totals from these counties: 83 in Maricopa, 65 in Pima, 31 in Coconino, 11 in Navajo, seven in Pinal, five in Apache and three in Mohave.

Yavapai, Yuma and La Paz reported one each, as of Monday. Information on deaths in those counties differed on the state site Tuesday, showing fewer than three deaths for each of the three counties.

Gila, Greenlee, Graham, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties each reported no deaths as of Tuesday, according to state data.

Of the statewide identified cases overall, 47% are men and 53% are women. Previously, the majority of cases were men.

People 65 and older made up 150 of the 208 total deaths. While race/ethnicity is unknown for 27% of deaths, 39% of deaths were white, 18% were Native American and 11% were Hispanic or Latino.

Of the 5,251 individuals who have tested positive, 3.96% have died.

The Navajo Nation recorded 164 new cases of the coronavirus and nine related deaths on Thursday.

That brings their total to 2,141 cases and 71 deaths. Navajo territory spans three states, with cases in all three: New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.

This comes just before a 57-hour weekend curfew, which will go into effect tonight at 8 p.m. local time.

Under the curfew, all residents will be required to stay home except for essential workers. Navajo police will also set up checkpoints on roads and issue citations for those who break curfew.

The Navajo Nation extended its state of emergency declaration and said government offices will stay closed until May 17.

Arizona asks "virus predictors" to stop making projections about Arizona, as they are reopening.

Arizona, which is about to reopen, told its virus experts to stop making projections after they suggested the outbreak there has not yet peaked

The Governor asked its universities and colleges to silence projections and any data from studies in the population at large.

This rather futile effort won't keep academics and scholars outside of Arizona from using CDC data for projections, nor will it stop Arizona's university scholars from publishing their data outside of Arizona.

There are 1,585 reported cases in Pima County and 134 deaths.

The Health Department implemented the use of death certificate surveillance on May 1. This change will cause the number of new deaths reported daily to jump more than expected for a few days, according to Dr. Cara Christ with ADHS.

“Arizona has reported an average of more than 1,000 new cases every day this week — the highest per capita ratein the U.S. Underscoring the crisis, the health department said Tuesday that only a quarter of the state's beds in intensive care units are currently available.

Public health experts say these surges should not be dismissed as a result of more testing.

"It's very clear that it's a real increase in community spread," Will Humble, executive director of the Arizona Public Health Association, tells member station KJZZ in Phoenix. "It's not some artifact of additional testing."”

“I'm definitely worried," says Dr. Bill Miller the senior associate dean for research at Ohio State University's college of public health. "As places have been opening up, many people are taking it as a message that everything is OK and back to normal.”

Truly scary across the board!

I have noticed many people out shopping, with children along, and none of them wearing facial coverings. None of this is being taken seriously anymore. Yikes!
