Explosives, weapons found in house of missing teen
by Parker Leavitt - Dec. 11, 2008 04:56 PM
The Arizona Republic

Police found explosives and dangerous weapons inside a Phoenix home Thursday while searching for clues surrounding the 2001 disappearance of a 17-year-old girl.

Alissa Marie Turney disappeared May 17, 2001, the last day of her junior year at Paradise Valley High School. Her stepfather had reportedly returned home from work and found a note from Alissa, saying she was going to California. She hasn't been seen since, and police treated the investigation as a runaway juvenile case.

Police said witnesses recently came forward with information that led police to seek two search warrants. Police used the warrants to search the current home of Alissa's family as well as the home they lived in when she disappeared.

Officers found the explosives at the family's current home in the 17200 block of North 34th Street.

There was no word yet on what else was found in the home.

Anyone with information about Alissa's disappearance should call the Family Investigations Bureau Missing Persons Unit at 602-261-8042 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Search warrants served in connection with cold case; explosives, weapons found
Dec. 11, 2008 03:18 PM
12 News

Phoenix police are investigating possible explosives at a house near 34th Street and Bell.

The warrants were being served in connection with a missing persons case that happened seven years ago. Alissa Marie Turney went missing on May 17 of 2001. Alissa was picked up early from school by her stepfather. Her stepfather reported that they went out to eat and then returned home. Alissa was left alone while her stepfather ran errands and then picked up another child. When the stepfather and daughter returned to the home around 5pm they found a note purportedly from Alissa stating she was going to California. Her cellular phone and house key were also left behind.

The case was considered a runaway juvenile case, but as the years passed, investigators began to question that theory.

In 2006 a man named Thomas Heimer came forward and confessed to a number of homicides throughout the country. He claimed Alissa Turney was one of his victims. Police found no evidence to support Heimer's story. He was not charged in the case.

In recent months, police have developed probable cause to serve search warrants at the house near 34th Street and Bell.

While serving the search warrants today, police may have found weapons and possible explosives at one of the residences.

PHOENIX -- Weapons, ammunition and pipe bombs were found in a north Phoenix home Thursday and now the investigation has expanded to a second home.

Residents of the neighborhood were able to return home Friday after being evacuated Thursday afternoon when police found explosives at a home near 34th Street and Bell Road.

Officers asked residents within a one-block radius to evacuate as a precaution around 2:30 p.m.

Detectives found the explosives while conducting a search warrant at the home of a missing girl's stepfather. Alissa Turney disappeared in 2001 when she was 17 years old.

Her stepfather, Mike Turney, 60, was the last person to see her before he claims she ran away to California. Now police say they have enough evidence to re-open this cold case and take a closer look at Alissa's stepdad.

Police found weapons in the home in addition to 34 improvised explosive devices and two handmade silencers.

According to the police report, one pipe bomb was approximately 2 feet in length and 6 inches in circumference. The bomb was packed with approximately 20 pounds of roofing nails.

Police arrested Turney on two counts of misconduct involving weapons. More charges were added and Turney now faces 22 counts for possessing prohibited weapons.

At the time of his arrest Turney was armed with two handguns, multiple magazines and a knife.

"This is the largest seizure of I.E.D.s the Phoenix Police Department has ever made and the largest seizure we are aware of," said Sgt. Andy Hill. "ATF officials at the scene were also not aware of a larger seizure of this type in the Phoenix area. Phoenix Bomb Squad investigators stated one of the pipe bombs was the largest they had ever seen and was capable of destroying the house."

Investigators are also searching a house across the street from Turney's home. Turney owned the house seven years ago.

Turney remains in police custody and will not be release due to a hold put on his arrest by the ATF.

With the ATF's involvement it is possible the case could be turned over to federal authorities.

The Missing Persons Unit will continue to conduct a separate investigation into the disappearance of Alissa.

She could be a match- the previous broken nosehttp://www.doenetwork.org/cases/328ufca.html
does anyone know if she has been ruled out?

wow! this is probably one of the best matches I have seen and the fact that a prior broken nose had also been verified in the remains makes this a strong possibility, I don't know if this has ever been submitted, but if I were u I would do it for sure. this is a very very close match to her.

LE that has this case has said that "Sacramento’s facial construction" is not a match, and anything that has been submitted as of today have been "discredited".

Which LE said that--Phoenix or Sacramento? What submitted--pictures of Alissa or pictures of the reconstruction?

Julesleuther, LE Phoenix told me this yesterday. I can ask him exactly which ones are discredited, but he stated the Sacramento UID was not her for sure. And unless there are other ones that are from Sacramento, I am assuming it is The Doe Network: Case File 328UFCA. This way we could work from there. Also, I have read most of the stories written in newspaper articles about the father's arrest on weapons charges in 2008. I have a few more to read this morning, then I will post some thoughts on this case.

The first thought that came to my mind when I read this article:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/12/13/20081213turney1213.html

"what those who knew the family perceived as a decision to flee the stepfather she was forced to live with after her mother died of cancer"

thought about this:
1. Alissa missing since 5-17-01, now some 7 years later, this comes out in a article.
2. Michael Turney was the step-father, where is the biological father, no mention of him in anything I read?
3. Did LE pull cell phone records on her phone to see who she had been talking to that day?
4. What was the timeframe on when stepfather picked her up early from school and then picked up the younger sister from school?
5. Supposedly the ate lunch, where and was this confirmed?

Which LE said that--Phoenix or Sacramento? What submitted--pictures of Alissa or pictures of the reconstruction?

Sorry, Julessleuther:
It is Phoenix LE. To confirm, it is 328UFCA and 218UFAZ, both of these reconstructions are not Alissa. confirmed today in email from LE.

Hello there. This thread has not been active for a while but I just wanted to post something. I am Alissa's cousin, and wanted to thank all of you for trying your best to help us with the case. I didn't realize until I came upon these posts yesterday that there were many people other than detectives working on the case, and to see this makes me more happy than I can say.

There will be a story about Alissa on ABC's 20/20 either at the end of this month or some time in August. If you are interested and see this I will post information about when it will be when we know for sure.

Thank you again

I am definitely interested and can't wait to hear when the date is!

Thank you for the interest: The ABC story about Alissa will be this Wednesday, 7/29, on ABC Primetime. The time varies by location so check your listings.

We are told that many people were interviewed that have given some perspectives that were not previously known, so it hopefully will add to the investigation, and will get the story out to the mainstream public.

Thanks once more!
