WHARTON COUNTY, Texas – Twenty-five years to the day after 15-year-old Rosemary Diaz went missing, investigators in Wharton County say they believe they have found the remains of her body in a shallow grave.

"The main thing is closure for the Diaz family," Sgt. Scott Grosser of the Wharton County Sheriff's Office said at a news conference Wednesday morning. "That's a family that has kept the memory of Rosemary alive for 25 years. They never let her memory die. They never gave up. It's all about bringing Rosemary home now."
Grosser said investigators were led to the location of human remains in a rural area in Matagorda County based on new evidence provided by members of the family who owned the property.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A man who was killed in a car crash in 1995 in Virginia has been positively identified as Jason Callahan, a man who was reported missing from Myrtle Beach 20 years ago. New DNA samples submitted this year confirmed the identity of “Grateful Doe,” months after efforts on social media led investigators to connect the two cases.

The Virginia Medical Examiner’s office and a representative for the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUS) confirmed that Callahan is “Grateful Doe,” a young man who died in a car accident in June 1995, but was not identifiable due to his extensive injures.

The former police chief of Suffolk County was arrested Wednesday on federal charges that he walked into an interrogation room three years ago, badly beat a man who was suspected of having stolen items from his police vehicle, then coerced fellow officers to cover up the act, prosecutors said.

The former chief, James Burke, 51, who left the force recently as a federal investigation into the episode mounted, faces charges that he violated the man’s civil rights and later obstructed an investigation into the matter.

“No one is above the law,” Robert L. Capers, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said while outlining the allegations at a news conference at the federal courthouse in Central Islip, on Long Island.

Suffolk police top brass assured families of victims of the Gilgo Beach murders Thursday that, even after five years, the investigation remains active and the department has asked the FBI to assist in the probe.

“As we approach the [five-year] anniversary, on behalf of the Suffolk Police Department, I want to convey to the loved ones and the families of all the victims that we are dedicated to do everything we can to solve this case,” Deputy Police Commissioner Tim Sini said. “Rest assured, this case remains active.”

“Anniversaries create opportunities,” Sini said. “We’re here today because we think it’s important to let the public know we are doing everything we can to solve these murders.”

How Internet sleuths on Facebook and Reddit solved the 20-year-old mystery of a missing teenager

Users on Websleuths, a forum popular with cold-case and true-crime fanatics, had been cross-referencing Grateful Doe’s case against hundreds of entries in the missing persons’ database since July 2005. The search only heated up last December, however, when Reddit took on the case.

That month, an Australian woman with the handle greymetal opened a Grateful Doe subreddit and posted his picture to Imgur.

Las Vegas Strip crowds struck as car intentionally plows into pedestrians on sidewalk

http://www.abc-7.com/story/30797452/...ntentional-act

(CNN) -- A driver veered onto a crowded sidewalk several times on the Las Vegas Strip, injuring more than 30 people in what authorities described as an "intentional" act.

At least one person was killed and 37 others injured near the Paris Las Vegas Hotel on Sunday night, authorities said.

Witnesses said the woman was driving down Las Vegas Boulevard before her car jumped onto the sidewalk and started striking pedestrians.

She allegedly drove the 1996 Oldsmobile sedan onto the sidewalk at different spots and hit more people before barreling down the road.
