Man accused of killing Irvine resident camping with kids in Malibu Creek State Park sentenced for attacking deputies

Deputy District Attorney Antonella Nistorescu told jurors that Rauda became “angry and rageful” over court proceedings, and “he takes it out on deputies.”

A man accused of murdering a research scientist from Irvine in Malibu Creek State Park was sentenced Tuesday, June 21, to three years and eight months in jail for attacking two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies while he has been in custody.


Jurors had found Anthony Rauda, 45, guilty of two felony counts of battery with injury on a peace officer. The sentence he received Tuesday from Superior Court Judge David Fields amounted to time he has already served behind bars. Rauda remained in jail while awaiting trial on far more serious charges.

4/7/22 Update: Rauda was back in court this week to face unrelated charges stemming from violent attacks on two deputies. Rauda arrived in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday & pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of battery on a peace officer stemming from two separate attacks on Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies in March 2020 & last month. Despite having been in jail for nearly four years, Rauda, a career criminal, has managed to rack up additional charges while in custody & earn himself a reputation as a violent inmate, leading to the use of a restraint chair & occasionally a spit hood, during his court appearances. At a subsequent probable cause hearing on March 24, another judge found 'more than sufficient evidence' to order Rauda to stand trial for the alleged attacks on the deputies & refused to downgrade the felony battery charges against him to misdemeanors. On Thursday, Judge David Fields ordered Rauda back in court on 5/3/22 for a pretrial hearing.
5/3/22 Update: Murder: Hearing was reset to 6/29/22.
6/9/22 Update: Battery: Trial started on 6/7/22. The jury Thursday returned guilty verdicts on 2 counts of battery on a peace officer for two incidents that happened inside the courthouse lockup following his arrest in the murder case. Rauda was not in court when the verdict was read Thursday afternoon in downtown LA. The jurors also found true an aggravating factor on one of the counts: that Rauda is a danger to society. That finding can affect sentencing. Rauda was sentenced Tuesday, June 21, to three years & eight months in jail for attacking two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies while he has been in custody.
