GUILTY CA - Two police officers shot, one killed, San Diego, 28 July 2016 *Arrests*

Come on, it's too hard to believe LE still hasn't figured this bolded part out yet, but all we can do is wait.

The reason for the attempted field stop, and whether Gomez was on foot or in a vehicle at the time, remained unclear and the investigation was ongoing, according to Zimmerman. She said the department would release more information as it becomes available.

I really wish we could find out soon what the body-camera footage shows as to how this happened. Plus there's the injured police officer and the injured alleged shooter both still recovering with their sides of the story. In the meantime, we're learning a little more about Jesse Michael Gomez. His pic with his granddaughter is in the below article and his son makes statements that he didn't think his father had gang ties.

I did hear some of Gomez's past criminal record on News8 tonight. I'll try to post a link when it's available. (I think the last offence was in 2002 for meth.) Gomez was also critically injured and his arraignment is being postponed for now. Still wondering how this really came down and why.

One officer died and the other one was critically injured. Gomez was also shot and injured and found in a ravine. Did he have a weapon on him? Some reason to shoot? As promised, here's the video that tells of his record.

Gomez, 52, his record includes:
- in 1983 for auto theft and drunk driving
- in 1992 for a felony possession of a firearm and did some prison time for it
- in 2002 under the influence of meth

 It's true the pic of the suspect with his granddaughter shouldn't have been published. This news article I posted above has gotten some harsh comments.

I'm waiting for the body cam footage and the evidence LE should have that Gomez had the gun used to shoot the officers. I hope they will release info and go with the new transparency process in this case. Still wonder why he'd shoot two officers so quickly and for what reason. LE hadn't even been able to determine if he was in a vehicle at first or being stopped as a pedestrian...so, it's no wonder I'm want to make sure they got the right shooter.

I don't leave comments under news articles, but I'd like to voice my opinion here.

Going off topic a little to bring up my concern for the 9 yr. old granddaughter of the arrested police shooter and the use of that little girl's image used in the newspaper article.

Although, I think the girl's parents supplied that photo to the newspaper because it says "Courtesy Gomez family" to show the arrested as a grandfather, they didn't think of the danger it poses to that little girl now. It's bad enough she's going to feel some embarrassment about her grandfather being arrested, now she might be bullied at school. It's probably the first time she ever had her pic in the paper, but this is not really a proud moment for her.

MOO, the newspaper should have blurred her image out. I'd love to hear what others think about this.

Suspect in Killing of SDPD Officer Shot Officers Point-Blank: DDA

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...er-to-Be-Arraigned-in-Hospital-388971442.html

The man accused of shooting two San Diego police officers – killing one and seriously wounding the other – allegedly fired at the officers point-blank, shooting one officer in the throat and the other in the torso.

Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge, a felon with a firearm charge, with a special circumstance that carries the potential for the death penalty. The decision on whether the death penalty will be sought will not be made until after the preliminary hearings, according to a District Attorney spokesperson.

Gomez was arraigned from his hospital bed...

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...er-to-Be-Arraigned-in-Hospital-388971442.html

more from NBC News7 somewhat GRAPHIC:

Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon said the shooting happened when SDPD officers Wade Irwin and Jonathan DeGuzman initiated a pedestrian stop late Thursday night. Officer Irwin got out and asked Gomez if he lived in the area, Runyon said.

Gomez allegedly turned around and shot Irwin with a handgun, striking him in the throat.

He then made his way to the passenger side of the patrol car where DeGuzman was seated, Runyon said. DeGuzman, sitting in the driver's seat, was shot point-blank in the car multiple times before he ever raised his service weapon, he said.

Officer DeGuzman was struck in the right torso; the bullet punctured both lungs, severed his spine and punctured his pulmonary artery. He suffered four additional bullet wounds.

Runyon said Officer Irwin could see his partner being shot at and, despite his wounds, raised his service weapon and fired at the suspect. He was unsure if he had struck the suspect, Runyon said.

At that point, Gomez fled the scene.

"At that time according to Officer Irwin, Officer DeGuzman was not saying anything and all he could hear from OD was moaning sounds," Runyon said.

Gomez was found in a nearby rivine, unconscious. Runyon said police found casings matching the weapon used.

Man accused of shooting two SDPD officers remains in custody on $5 million bail

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — 3:24 p.m. — The ex-con accused of fatally shooting San Diego police Officer Jonathan "J.D.'' DeGuzman and wounding his partner has been ordered to remain in custody on $5 million bail.

Jesse Michael Gomez is charged with murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, and faces a special circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer that makes him eligible for the death penalty if he's convicted.

Apparently, this man, goes by the tag "Low Man" was not in a car.
http://www.cbs8.com/story/32600991/5-million-bail-for-san-diego-police-shooting-suspect

The details come as a shock to me. The officers were making a pedestrian stop. He was a pedestrian, goes and shots the one officer who got out of the patrol car to ask him a question, then went to the driver's side and fatally shot Officer DeGuzman still sitting.

What was Gomez doing with a gun on him and was that all he was trying of avoid criminally that made him shoot these officers immediately?

http://www.10news.com/news/san-diego-police-shooting-suspect-to-be-arraigned-in-hospital-080216

Reported here that Officer Irwin activated his body camera after the shooter fled the scene.

The suspect was found unconscious in a ravine with an empty gun holster.

Oh yeah, I agree, popsicle. He'll get that DP, but we all know that's not much of a threat of being put to death.

He's 52 now. We'll house and feed him for the next 20-30 years.

I heard on one of the news broadcasts that California Governor Jerry Brown will be attending one of memorial services for Officer DeGuzman.

Let me fill you in on what I just heard on CBS News8 in my own words. It sounds like it happened so fast that the officer's body camera wasn't turned on until after Officer Irwin was shot. He has since confirmed the identity of the shooter to be Gomez.

Apparently, there were two men standing on the street which was Gomez and perhaps Cassani. The two men separated and parted ways quickly upon officers arrival on the scene. There was mention of "a white or clear plastic baggie being seen"...this may be an important detail going towards the reason or the motive. Officers approached Gomez. Officer Irwin got out of the car and Gomez shot him IMMEDIATELY. He then went to the other side of the patrol car and fatally shot Officer DeGuzman.

Sounds like Gomez committed these outrageous crimes of shooting at police officers just because he didn't want to go back to prison. MOO, dumbest decision he ever made, and he must've been on some substance to think he could ever get away with shooting two police officers.

http://www.cbs8.com/story/32600991/5-million-bail-for-san-diego-police-shooting-suspect

he has two felonies that were likely strikes, and had drugs and or a weapon he was not authorized to have. he didn't want to face the 3 strikes law, simple as that. its crazy to me that he went straight to shooting cops though!!! did he think he wouldn't get caught????

it doesn't matter either way to me whether he gets DP. I am not against it, but it is so costly in CA that its cheaper to house him for life, and mainline isn't as cushy as death row.

oh and the splitting up was the reason for the ped stop. im betting if they had just waved hi and kept on, they wouldn't have even been questioned, they were older. unless one or both were frequent flyers. but it sounds like this guy hadn't had a conviction in awhile?

Memorial Services Held for Slain San Diego Police Officer

Officer De Guzman's 17-year-old son served as one of the pallbearers.

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...Slain-San-Diego-Police-Officer-389175642.html

"Officers from as far away as Colorado, Oregon, Washington, New York, and Chicago attended the service.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman gave the eulogy which included a few personal stories of the officer she has known for years.

When the mass ended, De Guzman's 11-year-old daughter walked out of the church beside her mother. Behind them were De Guzman's parents."

..............

News said California Governor Jerry Brown will be attending Friday.

A second service will be held Friday morning at Shadow Mountain Community Church in the eastern suburb of El Cajon, and will be followed by a burial.

:getwell: Wishing Officer Wade Irwin continued healing and strength in his recovery. He's a hero. I know his lovely wife and young toddler will be happy to have him home.

In court Tuesday, prosecutors showed footage captured on the body worn camera of an officer who responded to the scene.

The video shows fellow officers trying to save De Guzman's life.

It also shows them driving him to the hospital in a patrol car.

The officer whose camera captured the video broke down on the stand after the video was played.
