RCMP loaded up a boat this afternoon on the Nelson River. We'll find out if they were able to dive and what turns up later today we hope. #Canadamanhunt

Interesting. The guy said "there are boats laying around everywhere". I wonder what made the RCMP focus on that specific boat? It could be anyone's boat.
I took the context to be "there are boats lying around everywhere (near where the RAV burned because people live around there)"

The boat has been found in an area where no one lives. You have to pass through the rapids to get there, and no one knowledgeable would take a boat like that through the rapids, because it, and you, would be seriously damaged.

I don't think it's correct to interpret the comment as meaning there are boats lined all the way along the river from Gillam to Hudson's Bay.

Here is the map and coordinates for Sundance Creek:

Sundance Creek

Thanks! Maybe it’s my eyes but I can see on that map the location where Sundance Creek probably flows into the Nelson River but not where it’s at PR290, if this is the location where the RAV4 was found.

I’m unable to link a pay-lock Globe report but it indicates the boat was found washed up in an area known as the lower Limestone rapids, near the Keewatinoow converter station. Other media reports only say it was found 13km from the RAV4.

As the Nelson River flows into the Hudson’s Bay, given the dot of Sundance Creek on the map, it seems the boat might’ve been found upstream from the RAV4. If so the chance it was the fugitives boat isn’t quite as high as if it was found downstream, unless they walked southerly before finding the boat. However it was also earlier reported the RAV4 was found “near” the Fox Lake Cree Nation which is also further south.

I’ve also noticed the placement of the RAV4 is mysteriously shifting on some of the media recent reports. I’m certain I looked at a CTV map only a couple of hours ago and it placed the vehicle’s location almost at the very end of the dead end road but now that map seems to have disappeared without a trace.

Yeah one of the details I remember from the article that I got blocked from viewing a second time was that it was in an area where the locals didn't boat because of the treacherous rapids. So, between that and them not seeing it in a previous search, it does sound like it piqued their curiosity and aroused suspicion for good reason.

“August 2- Green rowboat spotted by helicopter on shore of Nelson downriver from burnt car”

If the boat was found downriver from the location of the RAV4 that’d be a very promising development but I’m unable to find any confirmation of that, one way or another. Only that the RCMP is not disclosing its location -

“Officers searching the area from a helicopter had spotted a damaged aluminum boat on the shore of the river on Friday afternoon, the RCMP said.

The force sent a five-member dive team to conduct a “thorough underwater search of significant areas of interest” Saturday night, according to an RCMP statement.

The force declined to identify the exact location of the latest discovery.

“To protect our officers in the area, we’re preferring not to say the exact location of where the boat was found or where the URT team [Underwater Recover Team] is searching,” Letisha Sherry, a social media specialist with Manitoba RCMP, wrote in an email to the National Post.”

I don't know how accurate that is. If he was 6'4" and 125 lbs his BMI would be 15.2 which is severely underweight. Under 18.5 is considered to be underweight. He looked thin but not thin enough that it was concerning, which is what a BMI that low would be.

I mean...I'm 5'4" and 125 lbs and that's considered to be right in the middle of the "healthy range" for me...someone an entire foot taller than me but the same weight would look absolutely skeletal, I would imagine.

I weigh 125lbs and I’m a 42 year old 5’4” female in good shape. I feel like if a 6’4” 18 year old guy was 125lbs he would be in extremely rough shape.

who knows how many boats are in that area that look just like that boat minus the same damage. that boat looks like just a common flat bottom boat. I see nothing that makes it look special except the damage and who knows when the damage happened. someone could have set that boat free as a way of disposal if it already had the damage.

It might not look special to you or me, but you might get a stink eye if you told the local fishermen that their identical boats all looked the same.

The locals could probably tell you which boat belongs to whom. We don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that the RCMP knows who is the owner of the boat.

Butnau Marina is near Fox Lake Cree Nation.

Even if no boat was found, I wonder if RCMP would have brought in the divers anyway. The RAV in flames, immediately reported, searchers hone in on the surrounding land area...and nothing. BS/KM may have thought they could outdistance searchers limited to searching on foot, dogs would not be able to follow their scent on the river. They may have come across the boat further back up the road, maybe transported it on top of the RAV4. I wonder what the water was like at the site of the RAV4 burning, if it looked easy to control a boat, keep it near the shore, waiting for yet another opportunity to somehow get out of the mess they now found themselves in? OR--did they figure this was the end, a way to never get captured alive?

Exactly what I was wondering, would they have searched the river regardless? Speculation only but when the airforce was flying overhead and mapping the area they would also have the ability to identify areas of interest based on river flow. This wasn’t an ad hoc endeavour as “significant areas of interest” were announced only one day after the boat was found.

Ah, good point--I will correct that!

Agreed! I think though, that we might be able to take from this that BS was lighter than 170lbs--if not as "skinny" as 125lbs.

Of course, if they were on the run for any length of time, I'm sure both suspects would be burning through the calories and losing weight.

SBM

That's what I am thinking. I'm thinking KM might be 170 but closer to 6 feet tall, maybe 6'1. I also wonder if BS was 125 when he lived with his dad 3 years ago. I could see him putting some weight on since then, still being well under 170 but not being 125, but his dad still thinks of him that way.

I think one of the problems is simply whoever did the descriptions in the beginning really botched them. And I don't know if that was LE or whomever provided the info.

I double-checked the release from when they were missing and even their pictures were misidentified! BS was listed as KM and vice versa. Beyond that, even their physical descriptions are off, with the wrong hair color. It wouldn't surprise me if the heights and weights were wrong, though I do think BS is a legit 6'4." He looks super tall and lanky in every picture I have seen of him.

Insp. Fiedler, the commander overseeing search efforts, said the extent of the boat’s damage prompted him to request the dive team.

“Whether it’s the subjects we’re looking for or whether it’s another member of the public, we have an obligation to do a search-and-rescue effort there to make sure that there’s nobody out there as a result of some kind of boating accident,” he said.

As of late Saturday, police had not located the rowboat’s owner. Insp. Fiedler said there was no forensic evidence to gather from the boat, which was found wrecked below the lower Limestone rapids, near the Keewatinoow converter station.

Yes, the air force may have mapped areas of interest, or perhaps the RCMP may have asked a local guide. If the First Nations people have been living here for the past 5000 years, then they really know the river, and likely know exactly where a body might end up.

Does it look to you that the URT has a local guide onboard?
