"Did the killer have a connection to Sonia? “Possibly in his own mind,” responded Mr. Pritchard.

Do the police have any specific suspected in mind? He said they have not focused on an individual at the risk of ruling out all possibilities. "

"There had been a Forensics van parked by an apartment in Orangeville. Was there a connection? This didn’t seem to be definitively answered except to the effect that Forensics has its own role to play. But earlier information was that the investigation includes a reliance on forensic evidence."

Glen found her, just after 4 p.m., lying in the studio lined with black and white portraits of newlyweds and young families. He had just returned home from Georgian College, where he is studying to become a nurse, after a career in sales.

Thanks for the link, Dotr.

That poor woman is way worse than has been reported. OMG. I hope she recovers from her horrible injuries.

Is the nurse thing just a coincidence?

Thank-you for this, Matou.

Now, my question is, what kind of forensic testing takes SO LONG? It was said in mid-Dec. that LE was still waiting for forensics from Sonia's case. I don't know if anyone here knows what type of testing may take so long?

Were the attacks deliberately dissimilar?

Is there a connection between Sonia’s murder and the brutal attack in Mono? Mr. Pritchard reiterated that no connection has been drawn. The events had dissimilarities, he said: one in daylight and the other after dark; one in densely populated urban and the other isolated rural.

Again, the police are asking the public to report anything unusual or out of place – no matter how insignificant it might seem.

0 .No connection between trailer park and attack: police

Separate investigations:. Police searched a Mono trailer park on Dec. 10, three days after a woman was brutally attacked nearby, following a reported series of break-ins. Richard Vivian Three days after a woman was brutally attacked in Mono, a large number of police officers scoured a nearby trailer park.

That search, investigators said, is unrelated — brought on by reported break-ins — and no connection between the two incidents has been uncovered

Rebecca's home is on 2nd St, which is only a few blocks long. Sonia's car was found at the GH building at the corner of Broadway and 3rd St.

I note that a Charlene G (pic leads me to believe she is Rebecca's mom?) posted Dec 17 on a FB page for Sonia:

Sorry,3 posts.
Number 3 is slain nurse Sonia Varaschin, whose killer is still on the loose but I am confident will be on this list one year from today. Sleep well, you b.....d.

Hopefully he will be interviewed by OPP Det.-Sgt. Jim Smyth, my Number 2 pick because it was he who got the confession out of the evil slayer of innocents Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd. His chilling interview of former colonel Russell Williams is now the new standard in how that is done

Is Ancaster Ontario considered too far away to be considered related to what happened to Sonia? I just read this story:

Hamilton police are warning people to be vigilant after the “horrific” killing of a 73-year-old woman.

Investigators are also appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Police say Audrey Gleave, a retired school teacher, had been stabbed several times in a “very savage attack” that may have been sexually motivated.

Horrible!
It seems that the distance between these crimes is about 1 hour and 46 min., close enough I think, but if not, will see if another thread is going. It is hard to keep on topic when many crimes seem to overlap and after all, a spider catches prey not by spinning one straight line, but, IMO, by spinning many....

After reading of this recent murder my very first thought was if it was connected to Sonia's.

Orangeville to Ancaster (Hamilton) = 115 km – about 1 hour 31 mins

TORONTO - The "horrendous" sex murder of a retired teacher by at least one stranger has police conducting an extensive ground search and warning Ancaster, Ont., residents to be vigilant.
Divorced for about three decades, Gleave didn't have any kids and lived alone, Hrab said.

Investigators believe she was attacked by at least one stranger who sexually assaulted and murdered her.

"Stranger, sexual component, vicious, vicious assault. It was something very bad," a tired and disturbed Hrab said.

"The crime is horrendous."

What's going on? Is it the same guy? A serial killer or are there many monsters out there?

"Hamilton police are urging people to be vigilant after a retired schoolteacher was slain in a "very savage attack" that has disturbed even veteran homicide investigators.

Police issued the warning at a press conference Friday because detectives believe 73-year-old Audrey Gleave was killed by a stranger or strangers who remain at large.

Without divulging too many details, Hamilton police Staff Sgt. Steve Hrab, who oversees the service's homicide unit, told reporters the city's 11th slaying of 2010 is one of the most horrific he's seen in the last decade."

I immediately thought it may be linked to Sonia, too. If these cases are linked, it seems like women living alone are at risk... as though he seeks them out. Chilling.

Has anyone here been reading those bizarre posts on Sonia's FB wall as well as in the Toronto Police FB?

Bizarre isn't the word for it.
There are some real sickos out there.

there were 220 unsolved murders in Toronto, which means there are a lot of killers who could be sitting next to you on the subway!”

The article suggests there’s a crying need for Toronto Police to take a lead from Peel Regional Police, who have much better success in finding killers.

“Working a lot with Peel police’s homicide unit, I have seen their unique strategy of throwing everybody including the cleaning staff at cases garnering great success,” the reporter wrote.

“Peel will assign 25 detectives at a case and make sure everything they can think of is covered off while the evidence is still fresh. They make a homicide a service-wide priority and make every resource necessary available.”

Another vicious assault on a woman, this time in London,

A woman is in critical condition in hospital after an assault Tuesday night that's left police looking for the public's help.

The woman was found at about 11:30 p.m. in an apartment unit at 370 Wonderland Rd. South, near Springbank Dr. Her injuries are being described as "severe."
