This is a nice article and I didn't realize that Sonia was an obstetrics nurse as well.

Some more info:

"With the spring thaw, Leon is hopeful someone will come across the killer’s boots — described as size 10 or 11 Dakota or Wind River brand, possibly blood-stained. Prints matching the tread on those boots were recovered from at least one of the crime scenes.

“Now that spring sounds like it’s going to be upon us for good, we certainly need to keep eyes and ears open,” Leon said. “I do believe somebody in the community could very well hold the key to solving this crime by virtue of maybe coming across something discarded or overhearing something that might be very, very important.”

I hope this case gets resolved soon.

I have to add that although LE claims there is currently no link to the 3 cases, of SL, SV and KF I was driving last weekend to visit family that do live in that area. They are all reasonably close to eachother in distance. I stumbled upon heartlake road by accident and when i followed it up to highway 9 i passed one part of the road where SV was found and after turning on highway 9 I also passed the other road that links that intersecion to the right of me. Then shortly after to the left was Mono. So geographically all i can say is wow!

The MO's, geography, victims are all different from SV and SL's cases.

But, when I saw this sketch, I couldn't help but think they were close enough to compare.

The female children gave LE the description for the sketch, there is even a disclaimer on that.

Sketch of Sexual Assault Suspect Released

Wednesday, April 27, 2011
OPP are releasing a composite sketch of the person they believe may be responsible for two sexual assaults near Belleville.

The first happened in December of 2009, when a man assaulted a young girl in the hallway of the Holiday Inn in Quinte West.

Police believe that same man may be the person who assaulted another child in the Hampton Inn in Napanee on April 16th.

The suspect is a white man, in his late 20's to early 30's, approximately 6 feet tall.

He is thin, with a noticeable belly, short dark hair and brown eyes.

Police cautioned the public to be aware that the composite sketch may not be an exact rendering because the witness who provided the information is a young person.

In incidents the children were in the company of other children.

I am very disappointed and surprised that there hasn't been a break in this case yet. There was so much forensic evidence to work with. :(

Hopefully LE has some leads going behind the scenes??

Just throwing this out there -I was looking at Toronto unsolved crimes thread, when I noticed a terrible crime that had some similarities (oddly, the 13 yr old girl was left outside on the lawn) with the SV murder.
http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/WFive/20100129/w5_cold_case_100130/
"The OPP believe that the family was targeted by someone who knew they were home alone; someone who knew Cumberland Beach. But they have almost no forensic evidence. Incredibly, for such a bloody scene, the killer left none of his own DNA behind. Despite massive searches over many years, neither the murder weapon nor clothing, which police believe would have been covered in blood, have ever been found.

There was one bloody shoeprint found inside the residence and by comparing the tread pattern, police were able to identify the exact type of shoe. A Nike all leather court or tennis shoe which police believe was either a size 9 or size 10."

One poi in the case was a Brian Timothy Elson..

SV was dragged out of her house also. "The same intruder sexually assaulted the terrified youngster before dragging her out to her own backyard and bludgeoning her with something similar to a crowbar"

'The OPP say they're exploring a new avenue of DNA technology with help from American experts, in the effort to identify the killer"

New details emerge as Sonia Varaschin murder probe set to enter ‘new phase’

http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/a...chin-murder-probe-set-to-enter-new-phase?bn=1

Although Sonia Varaschin has been portrayed as a smiling, bubbly nurse who was loved by all, her life was hardly carefree.

In fact, her life was full of conflict in the days leading up to her murder, her mother says.

At the same time, OPP investigators have revealed that they will announce a “new phase” in the murder case Wednesday, although it does not involve an arrest or a person of interest, or even a reward.

However, Det. Insp. Andy Karski, an investigator with a history of solving complex cases, said he is “encouraged” since he took over the file a few months ago.

When reached by a reporter Saturday night, hospital spokesperson Tammy LaRue said she wasn’t aware of any disputes between Sonia and any member of the hospital staff. She said she would have to consult with human resources to verify those claims.

LaRue did say that Sonia “wasn’t under any disciplinary action. She left on her own terms.”

In addition to those alleged disputes, Michele has revealed for the first time that her daughter, who lived alone, had several disputes with three or four young men, who had rented a unit a few doors away, because of their late-night rowdiness.

“She was a nurse who worked shifts, so she called the police on them several times,” Michele says, adding that the young men have since moved out of the complex.
This is the part that I find very curious too.(Thanks to Valleyboy for link)
"But another troubling question: Michele can’t understand why somebody would not just leave her body there. Why move it to a field?"

Hey, I just read this article and although there were problems with her work at the hospital, I am SUPER suspicious of the young guys who rented near her. Have the police found out who they all are and if they had extra friends over who didn't rent???? This is where the police should be looking IMO. Wow.

Have we found out whether there was a sexual assault on her? I wonder when these guys moved out. JMO

I was sure that this case would be solved quickly. The authorities must have lots of DNA evidence from the house, car and even where the body was found. They even released the probable brand and size of the work boots presumed to be worn by the killer. I could be wrong but I doubt whether this brutal murder was the result of some hospital conflict although I guess it's possible that someone from her work may have been stalking her. It seems more likely that the killer was someone local who knew the area well. The fact that it seems the killer transported SV's body in her own car leads one to believe that either he had his own vehicle waiting where he dropped off her car or he walked home. I'm glad that the police are ramping up the investigation.

The thing I cannot get past is SV's body being dragged outside -the mess and resulting 'spectacle" reminds me somehow of a public flogging, or tar and feathering to humiliate and make a statement about the victim.

Remember there was a statement from a neighbour who said he heard yelling and another person with the same last name also made a statement:

"The townhouse complex where she lives is geared toward young families, with a tiny children’s park just a few steps from the missing woman’s home.

Brandon Lundy, 20, a tenant in Varaschin’s building, said he doesn’t feel as safe as before and never expected something like this to happen in his neighborhood."

and

Neighbour Steffen Lundy said he heard a ruckus late Sunday night in the vicinity of Varaschin's home.

"I was sleeping and pretty much woke up to car tires squealing . . . and yelling," Lundy recalled.

Dad of murder victim waits for answers

Orangeville woman killed last August; news conference Wednesday
By Ian Robertson, QMI AGENCY
Updated 2 hours ago

BOLTON - Grieving dad Attilio Varaschin is caught between two horrible worlds.

In one, he wants to know how his beloved daughter, Sonia, was slain almost nine months ago.

Another part of him doesn't, he said Monday.

"Knowing won't help me solve my problem," the retired plumber said. "It's still very fresh."

Words coming slowly, Varaschin, 67, whispered: "Nobody deserves that."

Investigators seeking Sonia Varaschin’s killer hope scores of Orangeville area men will say “ah” and volunteer DNA samples.

A specialist team will start taking inner-cheek swabs “within the next few days,” OPP Const. Peter Leon said Tuesday.

He said they collect the “very unobtrusive” samplings with any man over 18 who knew or met the nurse around the time she was slain in her Spring St. home last August.

“It’s voluntary,” Leon said. “Anybody who is not involved will certainly come forward.”

Investigators say they will be contacting a select group of males who were 18 years of age and older at the time of Varaschin's death and asking them for samples of their DNA in the form of a cheek swab. The swab is voluntary and will only be used to compare DNA recovered during this investigation and will be destroyed at the end of the investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone to please contact the Orangeville Police Service if they notice anyone who begins to exhibit a change in behaviour, acts strangely or may have abruptly moves as a result of the notification of this DNA canvas.

The spotlight will surely shine on anyone who declines to give a sample... the pressure is on, finally.
