The verdict -- a recommendation of either death or life in prison without parole -- was reached earlier today and is scheduled to be read at 3:45 p.m. in the courtroom of Judge Michael A. Smith.

Merritt, 62, was convicted June 10 of first-degree murder in the slayings of business associate Joseph McStay, 40, his wife, Summer, 43, and their two children, Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3, who disappeared from their Fallbrook home on Feb. 4, 2010.
