Five of the Best Movies that Depict Public Health Disasters

Disaster movies help inform moviegoers about the potential for a public health catastrophe, but most people are not very well-equipped to take any preventative or reactionary measures in the real world. Fortunately, there are numerous educational and career opportunities that can give interested individuals the necessary training to help themselves and others. For example, the CDC focuses on keeping the public safe from the many disasters that Hollywood has brought to the big screen...

Guatemala's President Alejandro Giammattei has declared a "maximum alert" over the possible arrival of coronavirus to the country, saying medicinal supplies are fully available at local hospitals.

Giammattei also confirmed that there are no infected cases at the moment, although he said a family was in quarantine after returning to Guatemala from South Korea.

So its not the CDC to blame for the lack of testing but rather states and even more so localities? And they have all just decided to stick their heads in the sand?

What's up with the Korean Airlines attendant who came down with it and spent the night in LA? No one testing anybody after that?
I don't know if blame is the right word. There is no stopping it per se. CDC is working with several modeling companies who are modeling the most likely areas for an outbreak with the thought to focus resources where they are needed. To just start testing people with no idea is a waste of resources.
But saying that, yes, the locals have the responsibility of submitting samples. I think a turf war. They want to test their own samples instead of sending to the CDC....IMO

Masks and N95 Respirators

N95 Respirators for Use by the Public

The FDA has cleared certain filtering facepiece respirators (N95) for use by the general public. To work as expected, an N95 respirator requires a proper fit to your face. Generally, to check for proper fit, you should put on your respirator and adjust the straps so that the respirator fits tightly but comfortably to your face. The CDC does not generally recommend facemasks and respirators for use in home or community settings. However, they may be appropriate for persons at increased risk of severe illness from influenza or other respiratory diseases.

The FDA has cleared the following N95 respirators for use by the general public in public health medical emergencies:
  • 3M™ Particulate Respirator 8670F
  • 3M™ Particulate Respirator 8612F
  • Pasture Tm F550G Respirator
  • Pasture Tm A520G Respirator
These devices are labeled "NOT for occupational use.”

General N95 Respirator Precautions

People with chronic respiratory, cardiac, or other medical conditions that make breathing difficult should check with their healthcare provider before using an N95 respirator because the N95 respirator can make it more difficult for the wearer to breathe. Some models have exhalation valves that can make breathing out easier and help reduce heat build-up. Note that N95 respirators with exhalation valves should not be used when sterile conditions must be maintained.

All the FDA-cleared N95 respirators are labeled as "single use", disposable devices. If your respirator is damaged or soiled, or if breathing becomes difficult, you should remove the respirator, discard it properly, and replace it with a new one. To safely discard your N95 respirator, place it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash. Wash your hands after handling the used respirator.

In one of Dr John Campbell's videos from about 2 weeks ago, he talked about trials of remdesivir and said that the trial patients would be the milder to middling cases. I presume that would mean that more severe/higher risk patients could still get it on compassionate grounds.

But they do need to know if it really makes a difference in helping the body combat the virus. They can't just assume one way or another, so the testing has to be done.

Excellent point, well taken. That makes so much sense. As to where the cases end up from where they started, I did a screen shot of the Team presser that speaks to such.

Canada warns of evolving risk as new COVID-19 case linked to Iran appears in Canada
''A recent study from a group of Toronto researchers estimated that there were far more COVID-19 cases in Iran than reported by officials: around 18,000, as opposed to 139, the number officially reported so far.

Brazil also reported its first case Wednesday, meaning that COVID-19 has now been confirmed on every continent except Antarctica. The case was in a 61-year-old man who had travelled to Italy, which is also experiencing a significant outbreak.

On Tuesday, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control warned that it wasn’t a matter of “if” the novel coronavirus would spread in the U.S., but “when.”

So very sad. Russia and China are allies. I would hope that Russia would help.

Two nurses in Wuhan have published an open letter pleading for health workers from around the world to come to China to help fight the coronavirus.

Yingchun Zeng, of the Guangzhou Medical hospital, and Yan Zhen, of the Sun Yet-sen Memorial hospital, also in Guangzhou, published a letter in the medical journal the Lancet on Monday describing mental and physical exhaustion and severe supply shortages on the frontlines of the outbreak.

Wuhan nurses' plea for international medics to help fight coronavirus

Zeng and Zhen are two of at least 14,000 nurses, among almost 20,000 medical personnel, from across the country who have gone to Wuhan to help the overwhelmed medical system. “But we need much more help. We are asking nurses and medical staff from countries around the world to come to China now, to help us in this battle,” they said.

I personally would like to know more about the screening. I just got over walking pneumonia, confirmed, and no travel anywhere. Most likely, my pneumonia symptoms, assuming I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, would mimic the virus. Nice to know (not).

That has been a huge issue with this new Coronavirus. The initial symptoms (Cough, Fever, Headache, achiness, etc.) is exactly the same symptoms as some other illnesses like getting a regular cold or the Flu.

Its really hard to know the difference in the beginning. I think the severity of the illness as it gets worse becomes a "red flag" to health workers that someone may have this virus, but the problem is by the time the person and health care workers realize its a real or suspected coronavirus case, the person could have spread it to others.
