First Tropical Storm of the Season (Alberto) -merged-

I guess Daytona Beach would not be the place to be later this week would it? I was riding down there with my friend to drop off her great grandmother. I haven't heard from her today, but I guess I should assume the trip is off? :( We were leaving from the Houston area tomorrow afternoon.

Hopefully it will at least end the wildfires that have plagued the state this year.

More than 20,000 people along Florida's Gulf Coast were ordered to clear out Monday as Alberto — the very first tropical storm of the new hurricane season — unexpectedly picked up steam and threatened to come ashore as a hurricane.

Forecasters posted a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast and a tropical storm warning from north of Daytona Beach to the Georgia-South Carolina line, saying Alberto could begin battering the coast early Tuesday. Gov. Jeb Bush signed a declaration of emergency allowing him to call up the National Guard and put laws against price gouging into effect.

"We're talking about powerful forces of nature," Bush said. "People need to take this very seriously."

If Alberto came ashore as a hurricane, it would be the earliest hurricane in 40 years to hit the United States, according to the National Hurricane Center. The earliest on record is Alma, which in 1966 struck the Florida Panhandle on June 9 — the ninth day of the hurricane season.

Any recent news? All I've heard is it is picking up steam!

We are 40 miles north of Tampa, Tampa is under a tornado warning at this time, we are getting heavy needed rain bands and the winds are picking up. They have manatory eva.right now west of 19 which is 5 miles from us. http://www.baynews9.com/Home.html

I see those sheets of rain slamming down on Greta's show Wind Chime. I've been in many a storm like this on the Oregon coast, with winds up to 80 mph. The rain went right thru my oilcloth raincoat, and when I got inside, I was soaked to the bone. LOL

Stay safe!

If anyone has a shortwave radio, they can listen to the ham radio operators on the National Hurricane Center net on 14.325 mhz. During a busy storm that can be quite interesting to monitor. So far I have not heard much but I suspect it will be more active as the storm gets closer to shore.

If the storm hits, you can hear emergency messages on 14.265. If things get bad I usually help out on that frequency, relaying messages for the Red Cross.

We are under a Tropical Storm Warning but I suspect by the time it cross Florida and gets here it will be a Depression. Looks like were are socked in with rain for a few days.

This is all attributed to Global Warming I guess LOL... sorry but I could not help it...I suppose GWB also had something to do w/ everything that is negative on this earth...Very Interesting, is as he was sooo not capable of running the country but was so masterful as to send a Hurricane to LA (Louisianna ....sp?) & Miss ---let's not put any blame on the local goverments and the fact that they are total and complete shisters who have never prepared for the disaster that was soon to befall them. Oh, and by the way he also targeted the residents of SE Asia w/ their Sunami. According to the press and others, he was the one reponsible...WHAT a pathetic way to report the news...

I am not going to be doing any walking for a day or so as Alberto is hovering at my door. I am sitting here right now listening to the rain pound on the roof.

My son is happy though. No school tomorrow due to the almost hurricane, a FlORIDA boys version of a "SNOWDAY."

I stocked up today on water and batteries.
We are ready!

Take care everybody in the path of Alberto~

We're a bit south of Tampa Bay. We've had some brief power outtages but it appears we're mainly going to get lots of rain, which we need.

Amen, lilsister!

Back to the topic at hand, though. I have to turn on the television to see if Alberto has done any damage! Of course, it is purely selfish on my part as we are heading to Destin in about a week. :blushing:

Its wet and windy here. We had a tornado warning earlier this afternoon and still remain under a watch. I think the worst of the rain is suppose to hit here sometime tonight.

Its almost passed over us here in N Fla. Our highest wind gusts were 45 mph. Not as much rain as was forecast (8 inches) we actually got arond 4.

Looks like as of now it is headed straight for you Tybee!

Be safe.
