Mariah Carey’s Disaster Performance on New Year’s Eve 2017

Manager

Not only did she not ditch rehearsal, we got to Times Square at 2:30 (p.m.) (and) they weren’t ready for her until 3:20 (p.m.), ” Stella writes. “We waited around for their stage manager. We had the stage from 3:20 to 3:50. She (Mariah) had a dance stand-in for the musical number.

She sat on the side of the stage with her ear-pack and her in-ears (monitors) and her microphone to make sure she could do the soundcheck. The most important thing to her was the sound.

“The sound was coming in choppy. She was assured it would work by the evening.”

Then things start to get chaotic,” the manager adds. “They start counting her down – four minutes, three minutes.
“Mariah: ‘I can’t hear’. Them: ‘You’re gonna hear when it goes live – two minutes!’ So, right when it goes live, she can’t hear anything. The ears are dead… So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence.

Once she pulled them off her ear she was hoping to hear her music, but because of the circumstances… all she hears is chaos. She can’t hear her music. It’s a madhouse. At the point, there’s no way to recover.”

............called TV boss Mark Shimmel to find out what had gone wrong after the show and he confirmed her in-ear monitors didn’t work, asking, “Couldn’t she just wing it?” “I’m like, ‘What? Are you talking about winging it? Are you on glue?'” the manager says.

"They then changed the battery pack, and they were still not working on the frequency four minutes before the show. We let them know again, and they just kept counting her down and reassuring her that they will work as soon as they go live, which never happened."

...............DCP claims that it was Carey who insisted on skipping the soundcheck. While Carey's representatives insist that the Times Square crowd made it impossible for Carey to hear the backing track, DCP claims that there was more than enough sound for Carey to hear the music.

..........explaining that every artist sings to tracks, especially in circumstances when the show can be loud and noisy.
"Every artist who goes out there sings to tracks. What Mariah was doing was singing to tracks," said Stella. "What you heard on the second song, “Emotions,” was her going to sing it live. That’s why you heard no vocals. It’s a song she sings every other day."

.........most likely error was an in-ear monitor set to the wrong frequency, in which case, the blame would instead lie with Carey's tech operators .............

Reminds me of how different Whitney Houston not only looked but sounded later in her 'career'. She couldn't hit the notes she once did without seemingly using effort. I don't mean to imply any reasons for Mariah's performances now, just stating that both artists had dramatic decreases in vocals as they aged. I think Mariah looks great, but lost her performance ability somewhere along the way. A few years back I recall her trying to sing Christmas songs live, but she sounded off her game then too. I love a good comeback story, so I'm still routing for her to literally find her voice again, IMO, it was heavenly (aside from those window breaking notes, lol)

First time I saw this, but she was having ear piece problem before in the interview with seacreat

Just a thought, but some in the entertainment biz. suffer hearing loss, and with good reason! imo.

Ultimately, the NYE show will prove to be a win-win for all involved.Spectacular performances help raise people above the everyday and mundane and the horror of these turbulent times. Sometimes...
The opposite of flawless can have the same effect, never mind the sound, this time MC gave everyone something to watch!!
imo, speculation.

does anybody even give a crap about MC besides herself?

i thought she went out with the 90's

can't even believe she got this gig

She has/had great range. She has misused and abused her range and her talent her entire career. If only she would have used that talent and range to sing on the notes, rather than constantly sliding into them. Vocal runs and slides are nothing compared to actually hitting notes. Mariah Carey? Like, did somebody leave this CD out in the sun? I've always found her annoying.

But she will always be appreciated for doing a great version of Pete Ham and Tommy Evan's (Badfinger) song

And appreciated for her cover of this Jackson 5 song...

I like the word annoying agitating works too - the screeching comes in for no reason related to the lyrics moo

"Well I haven't seen her yet this year, but I've seen the schedule and there is a rehearsal scheduled, and I'm sure she'll be there," host Ryan Seacrest said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday.

"I have a feeling ... she's (not) going to miss this rehearsal," co-host Jenny McCarthy added.

McCarthy said at first she thought it would not be a good idea to have Carey return.

"And then I said, 'That's genius.' I mean, it's brilliant for so many reasons, but most importantly, it's a second chance," she said.

The show will air on ABC at 8 p.m. EST and will also feature performances from New Orleans, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Imagine Dragons, Britney Spears, Nick Jonas, Kelly Clarkson and Shawn Mendes are among those slated to perform.

Mariah did a good job this year I watched her performance live on YouTube. CNN’s New Year coverage was dreadful.

DH and I tried to watch a few minutes here and there, but AC/AC don't have any chemistry. Show was boring and almost painful to watch. Ratings were probably in the toilet.
