George Zimmerman’s attorneys withdrew from the controversial Trayvon Martin shooting case Tuesday, saying they have lost contact with their client, who began making moves without consulting them.
The lawyers said Zimmerman called special prosecutor Angela Corey on Tuesday, a highly unusual move for the target of an investigation who is being represented by a lawyer.
Zimmerman made the call despite not having returned calls from his attorneys, Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig, since Sunday, Sonner said.
“He won’t even give me a collect call,” Sonner said.

Neighbor: George Zimmerman called me
In the midst of attorneys saying they couldn't reach George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman's neighbor says he talked to him Monday.
Frank Taaffe told Local 6 he spoke with Zimmerman on Monday afternoon around 1 p.m., just after special prosecutor Angela Corey decided not to send the case to a grand jury. He said Zimmerman called him and they talked for about 30 minutes.
Taaffe didn't go into huge detail about their conversation, but he did say Zimmerman's former attorneys weren't accurate when characterizing his emotional state at a news conference Tuesday. Zimmerman's attorneys Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner have stepped down, saying they couldn't get a hold of Zimmerman and hadn't heard from him since Sunday.

What happens now that Zimmerman is charged in Trayvon Martin death?

Excerpt:

Step 5 – Defense files a motion to dismiss based on Florida's “stand your ground” law

•If Zimmerman is charged, he is entitled to a pre-trial evidentiary hearing on whether he is entitled to the immunity based on the law.
•The burden at that hearing is on the defense to prove by “a preponderance of the evidence” (more likely than not) that Zimmerman was justified in using deadly force.
•In Florida, an individual can use deadly force anywhere (with no duty to retreat) as long as he/she:
1.is not engaged in an unlawful activity;
2.is being attacked in a place he/she has a right to be; And
3.reasonably believes that his/her life and safety is in danger.
•The judge decides whether Zimmerman’s actions were justified, and therefore entitles him to the “stand your ground” immunity.
1.If the judge finds the force was justifiable, then the charges are dismissed and Zimmerman is immune from further criminal prosecution and possibly, civil liability.
2.If the judge finds the force was not justifiable, then the charges against Zimmerman move forward.
• If the judge rules Zimmerman is immune, the prosecution can appeal that decision to a higher court.

.......The suspect was transported Wednesday evening to the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, police said. Zimmerman got out of a black SUV and was escorted into the center. He wore a red plaid shirt, with a black cloth draped over his head.

A hearing in the case may be held Thursday, according to authorities and Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara. Sheriff Donald F. Eslinger said officials would determine whether Zimmerman would be held in the general inmate population...........

O'Mara said a bond motion hearing may be held Thursday in Seminole County. "I will be seeking his release," he said of Zimmerman. Corey said Zimmerman had the right to appear before a magistrate within 24 hours of his arrest.

"I think (Zimmerman) is troubled by the fact the state decided to charge him," O'Mara attorney told reporters Wednesday evening. "I think anyone charged with second-degree murder would be scared."

He said his client will enter a plea of not guilty..........

Zimmerman was alone Wednesday when he turned himself in to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's office in Jacksonville, said Joyce Dawley of the department.

Prosecutors face hurdles in Trayvon Martin case
After an extraordinary public campaign to make an arrest in the shooting of an unarmed black teen, a Florida prosecutor came back with a murder charge in the case that has galvanized the nation for weeks.
But prosecutors face steep hurdles to win a second-degree murder conviction against neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin, experts say. They will have to prove Zimmerman intentionally went after Martin instead of shooting him in self-defense, refute arguments that a Florida law empowered him to use deadly force and get past a judge's ruling at a pretrial hearing.

Zimmerman's new lawyer, Mark O'Mara, told reporters Thursday afternoon that he didn't intend to use "a mother's words against her" in defending his client.

Prosecutors Contend that Zimmerman Provoked Martin
When Martin tried to run home, "Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin," it says.
"Zimmerman confronted Martin and a struggle ensued," it says, adding: "When police arrived Zimmerman admitted shooting Martin."
A person's cries for help could be heard in recorded 911 calls, the affidavit says, and Martin's mother "identified the voice crying for help as Trayvon Martin's voice."
The use of the word "profiled" is likely to be a flashpoint of debate.

Zimmerman spent his first night in prison in protective custody, where he could be watched at all times. Law enforcement sources told ABC News, the 28 year old "wept quite a bit" at night.

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m. ET: The affadavit filed Wednesday by prosecutors to establish probable cause of second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin case has been released by the court. In it, prosecutors claim that George Zimmerman profiled Martin on Feb. 26, and during his call to the police dispatcher "made reference to people he felt had committed and gotten away with break-ins in his neighborhood."
More from the four-page court filing:
Later while talking about Martin, Zimmerman stated "these ---holes, they always get away" and also said "these ----ing punks."
During this time, Martin was on the phone with a friend and described to her what was happening. The witness advised that Martin was scared because he was being followed through the complex by and unknown male and didn't know why. Martin attempted to run home but was followed by Zimmerman who didn't want the person he falsely assumed was going to commit a crime to get away before the police arrived. Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin. When the police dispatcher realized Zimmerman was pursuing Martin, he instructed Zimmerman not to do that and that the responding officer would meet him. Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher and continued to follow Martin.
Zimmerman confronted Martin and a struggle ensued. Witnesses heard people arguing and what sounded like a struggle. During this time period witnesses heard numerous calls for help and some of these were recorded in 911 calls to police. Trayvon Martin's mother has reviewed the 911 calls and has identified the voice crying for help as Trayvon Martin's voice. more at link: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout...d-degree-murder-trayvon-martin-143832017.html

Zimmerman's new attorney: Who is Mark O'Mara?

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com
When George Zimmerman made his initial court appearance on Thursday charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, he had a new lawyer at his side: Mark O’Mara, described by a longtime friend as a “fearless” lawyer and a “renaissance man.”

The central Florida defense attorney and former prosecutor has nearly 30 years of experience under his belt, representing clients in criminal cases ranging from drunk driving to the death penalty. He also has clocked time in front of the television cameras, serving as a legal analyst for local station WKMG Channel 6, where he commented on high-profile cases, including the Casey Anthony case and even the Martin one – before he was hired to represent Zimmerman.

The legal players in the Trayvon Martin case

The two prosecutors in the George Zimmerman case are veterans with more than 100 Jacksonville-area murder cases between them. The new Orlando defense attorney is a calming presence with decades of experience defending accused killers.

The Sanford judge assigned to the case is a newcomer — she has been on the bench a scant 16 months — with no experience handling high-profile murder cases.

Over the coming months in a Seminole County courtroom, prosecutors Bernardo De La Rionda and John Guy, defense attorney Mark O'Mara and Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler will be the key legal players in Florida vs. Zimmerman, a courtroom drama likely to play out on a national stage.

Defense Att. O'Mara: Trial is Long Way Off
The attorney for George Zimmerman, who's charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, said his client's trial would not likely start until 2013.
Attorney Mark O'Mara, who previously served as a legal analyst for Local 6, made the comments to National Public Radio, saying there's too much evidence to be evaluated for the trail to begin any time soon.

CBS News: Bond Issue Up Next in Case
At his bond hearing next Friday, Zimmerman's new lawyer, Mark O'Mara, will argue his client is no flight risk and that if he wanted to run, he'd be long-gone six weeks after the shooting of Martin. Zimmerman has not yet entered a plea. That will happen at his arraignment, scheduled for May 29. By then, he and his attorney hope, Zimmerman will be free on bond.
But there's another issue: whether Zimmerman, facing murder charges, is actually safer behind bars.
...Inside jail or out, Zimmerman's safety worries his lawyer. When asked what would surprise Zimmerman's critics most about him, O'Mara said, "That he truly isn't a monster, I think, that some people have made him out to be. Certainly, this was a tragic intersection of two young men's lives with enormously tragic consequences to one of them."

Zimmerman May Get Bail Next Week
George Zimmerman might get out of jail as early as next week, his lawyer said late on Thursday, telling the Associated Press Zimmerman would most likely get a bail hearing on April 20. After a judge Thursday scheduled Zimmerman's arraignment on a second-degree murder charge for May 29, it looked like he would be staying in jail until then. But his attorney, Mark O'Mara, said in a follow-up press conference that he would try to get Zimmerman on an earlier bond hearing, and it seems he has. However, simply getting a bond hearing does not mean Zimmerman will actually go free. He could be denied bail, or have it set so high he can't afford to pay it (Zimmerman's considered indigent by the state, and is not paying O'Mara's fees).
