GUILTY NC - Mariah Woods, 3, Onslow County, 27 Nov 2017 #10 *Arrest*

Interesting article today in the Jacksonville Daily News:

Some children in eastern North Carolina face more in their first years of life than many adults.

One such little girl captured the attention of the nation when she was reported missing on Nov. 27. The body of 3-year-old Mariah K. Woods was found by a dive team in Pender County on Dec. 2, and her mother’s boyfriend – who is accused of abusing the 3-year-old in unverified DSS documents – is charged with disposing of her body.

Onslow County was outraged and distraught over the loss of someone they didn’t know, and some of them decided to do something about it.

More than 60 people started the application process to become a Guardian ad Litem.

The influx of applications was expected when Mariah’s story was spread far and wide, said Kady Luke, the GAL supervisor for the N.C. Judicial Branch District 4 Guardian ad Litem Program, which covers Onslow, Duplin, Jones, and Sampson counties.

Their applications include a question about what prompted the person to fill it out, and many of the 60-some applications since Nov. 27 said it was Mariah’s case.
...
It’s a big process to become a GAL, which includes an online application, criminal and sex offender background checks, interview, and a 30-hour class. Only about half of those who started the application since Mariah’s case became public finished it and about 75 percent of those applicants have been interviewed and are ready for training, said Rusty Brown, the district administrator for the N.C. Judicial Branch District 4 Guardian ad Litem Program.
...
Those who are willing to fully commit, Brown and Luke welcome completely. As of the end of December there were 95 guardians advocating for 211 children in Onslow County, but there were another 89 children who have no one from the program to give them a voice yet.

I'm trying to get my head around the cause of death being chloroform. I think there must be more they aren't revealing yet, like injury not necessarily causing death. Do people have access to chloroform commonly?

WOW just wow...I wasn’t expecting that to be the COD.
Is chloroform an ingredient that is used to manufacture meth?
Just wondering since it seems very strange that ANYONE would have that chemical on hand.

The article stated the medical examiner found a preliminary cause of death but was waiting for the tox report. I wonder what he was able to see from the body?

The EPA says acute inhalation to chloroform can cause central nervous system depression, and at very high levels may result in death. The chemical can be made by combining several household products.

I had no idea it was possible to “make” it at home. Thanks to Casey Anthony, I am not interested in ever googling anything about that stuff. I guess I thought it was harder to obtain.

Wow. I'm really surprised by these new developments concerning the chloroform. I was also unaware that you could make this at home and admittedly, do not know much of anything about it. So he made this for the purpose of killing her or was his intent to "knock her out" to abuse her? Seems a person wouldn't go that route just to get a child to sleep for the sake of your also getting a full night's rest as a parent/boyfriend.

Will be interesting to see if this is just one puzzle piece in her death and how exactly it fits into the puzzle.

Poor Mariah. Such an adorable cute little girl.

Kept waiting and waiting for the autopsy results but I must say I'm completely caught off guard this morning by the results of the autopsy being chloroform. I wonder if they might also have found other things that have not yet been released?

Chloroform is one of the ingredients in refrigerant. Kimrey is HVAC technician and would have this on hand or have access to it.

Poor sweet Mariah. I’m so sorry your life was cut short by this monster.

Criminals use chloroform-soaked rags to render victims unconscious. However, it is nearly impossible to incapacitate someone using chloroform in this manner. It takes at least five minutes of inhaling an item soaked in chloroform to render a person unconscious. Most criminal cases involving chloroform also involve another drug being co-administered, such as alcohol or diazepam, or the victim being found to have been complicit in its administration. After a person has lost consciousness due to chloroform inhalation, a continuous volume must be administered and the chin must be supported in order to keep the tongue from obstructing the airway, a difficult procedure typically requiring the skills of an anesthesiologist.

Chloroform toxicity? Poor Mariah![emoji20]

We knew this was coming... but chloroform?

Charges of one count of first degree murder and one count of felonious child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury were filed against Kimrey this morning, January 24, 2018. ...

District Attorney Ernie Lee said that additional testing and analysis will continue to be performed by a pathologist and medical personnel at the Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville. A final autopsy report and toxicology results will be released at a later date.
