ADA: Killers covered Gloversville woman's body in fertilizer to hasten descomposition

Poremba said that Lamont, who was allegedly bludgeoned to death by accused murderers Georgios Kakavelos and James Duffy, was killed at the restaurant where she worked – Local No. 9 – a Johnstown diner owned by Kakavelos and managed by Duffy.

He also said Kakavelos, along with Duffy, allegedly tried to cover-up the crime by concealing Lamont’s body in tall grass and returning the next day, after dark, to bury her in a shallow grave. In addition to concrete, branches and paving stones, she was covered with fertilizer in hopes her body would decompose quickly, Poremba said.

He also said that Kakavelos had his Volkswagen Passat cleaned and detailed days later “with special attention to the trunk area.”

LaMont was last seen on Oct. 28 on Townsend Avenue in the city of Johnstown, near the Local No. 9 Deli where she worked. Her body was found on Oct. 31 in a shallow grave in Malta in a wooded area east of the on-ramp to Interstate 87 southbound Exit 13, on the west side of Route 9. Officials said Duffy and Kakavelos allegedly concealed her buried body by covering it with cement, stone blocks, dirt, mud, vegetation and tree limbs.

The autopsy of LaMont determined she died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head.

Tried really hard to figure out what the heck the motive would be for this but I haven't found a thing.

Such a horrific senseless crime over owing her back pay. I can not even say what punishment I wish for them, but it's more than a prison sentence.

'"George told me that he owed Ally money and that she was causing problems with the labor board so he had to take her out," Duffy said in a statement to investigators, according to the The Daily Gazette. It is not clear how much money Kakavelos owed LaMont."

Warning -- Graphic :(
"To stop her, Poremba alleges, Kakavelos offered Duffy money to “brutally beat” Lamont with a baseball bat. And when she didn't die, Poremba alleged, Kakavelos dealt the final blow with a sledgehammer at Kakavelos’ deli, The Local No. 9, in Johnstown."

So he paid a guy to kill her but couldn't just pay her what he owed her? wtf is wrong with people.

There is probably more to the story...Maybe she told him she would expose shady business practices/ he made a pass at her and she was planning to go public if he didn't pay the back wages?

Please know this is MOO, and with all due respect, this is a victim friendly site, and Allizybeth Lamont, 22, was the victim. I hardly think she goaded her employer into having to kill her.

She had every right to tell her employer that she would go to the labor board to get her overtime back pay if he refused to honor her legitimate request. She probably told others of her dilemma. We shall see what else comes out in trial.

MOO, there's no defending either of these two men's actions. Kakavelos, the owner and her employer set this horrible crime in motion. I hope he gets LWOP, but JMO. Nothing she did should've caused these two to kill her. In addition, the manner in which they did murder her was beyond cruel and depraved.

Jury sees video of Kakavelos Walmart purchases on day Lamont was killed | The Daily Gazette

"Kakavelos was at the store from 4:37 p.m. to 5:03 p.m. that day, making purchases that included two bags of fertilizer and thermal clothing, including gloves that may be linked to the crime. The witness, Noah Bailey, also testified that Kakavelos was back at the store from 8:17 p.m. to 8:27 p.m., shortly after Lamont was killed, to make a $73.25 purchase that included Clorox wipes, microfiber paper towels, cleaner, fabric softener, two bottles of bleach, heavy plastic sheeting, 55-gallon heavy-duty garbage bags, and duct tape – as well as an Almond Joy bar and a magazine."

Investigator admits 'huge mistake' in Kakavelos murder trial (timesunion.com)
Updated: May 18, 2021 6:38 p.m.

"A State Police investigator testified Tuesday he made a "huge mistake" by not seeking a search warrant to obtain potentially critical evidence in the murder case against Johnstown deli owner Georgios Kakavelos – his cell phone.

The cell phone contained a recorded argument between Kakavelos and Jimmy Duffy, his alleged accomplice in the deadly Oct. 28, 2019 bludgeoning of 22-year-old employee Allyzibeth Lamont, Investigator Darin Jones told jurors at Kakavelos' first-degree murder trial in Saratoga County Court.

"Looking back at this interview now, there's no doubt in my mind I would have seized that phone and obtained a search warrant," Jones testified.

I find it too difficult to post the gruesome details of Allyzibeth's murder by these two. Such brutality and it was over an employment issue that could've been worked out in a civilized manner. The owner Georgios Kakavelos had a wife and baby at home, and he thinks of doing this to a young employee of his because she wanted him to be an honest business owner and pay employees their overtime pay. That's how I see it no matter how many times he says "Never".

Allyzibeth Lamont murder: Georgios Kakavelos takes stand in own defense, denies killing Lamont (yahoo.com)
Tue, June 8, 2021, 12:46 PM

Jun. 8—FULTON & SARATOGA COUNTIES — Defendant Georgios Kakavelos of Milton took the stand in his own defense Tuesday afternoon at his trial in Saratoga County for first-degree murder in the 2019 death of Allyzibeth Lamont of Gloversville.

"Did you ask Mr. (James) Duffy to help you 'get rid of' Miss Lamont?" Kakavelos' attorney Kevin O'Brien asked Kakavelos Tuesday afternoon.

"Never," Kakavelos responded.

"Did you work with Mr. Duffy to come up with a plan to murder Allyzibeth Lamont?" O'Brien followed up.

"Never," Kakavelos responded.

Kakavelos continued on the stand Tuesday afternoon under questioning by O'Brien, to be followed by questioning from prosecutors.

[...]

Duffy pleaded guilty on April 30 to second-degree murder, and is expected to be sentenced to 18 years to life in prison in exchange for his testimony against Kakavelos. Kakavelos, if convicted of first-degree murder, could face life in prison without parole.

In three days of testimony that concluded on Monday, Duffy testified that Kakavelos wanted Lamont to die because he blamed her for an investigation into his business by the state Department of Labor, and for organizing other employees at the sub shop against him. Duffy, who was manager of the shop, testified that he was paid between $1,100 and $1,300 in cash for carrying out the slaying, then helping Kakavelos cover it up.

Lamont murder trial to go to jury on Monday | The Daily Gazette June 11, 2021

animated-court-image-0007.gif
County Court Judge James A. Murphy III told jurors he expects the prosecution and defense attorney Kevin O’Brien to present their closing arguments on Monday, with deliberations to follow.

Kakavelos will return to the witness stand briefly on Monday, after testimony was stopped late Friday when Kakavelos said that following his arrest, he tried to get “his side of the story” to the District Attorney’s Office through his attorney – information the jury should not have been allowed to hear. While it’s in dispute whether there was a contact attempt, there was no contact between the parties, both sides agree.

After a brief recess, Murphy instructed jurors to ignore the testimony about an attempted contact. During earlier cross-exam, Murphy also had to repeatedly warn Kakavelos to only answer the questions he was asked; Kakavelos often responded to questions by asking questions, or trying to defend his actions.

During cross-examination on both Thursday and Friday, Poremba showed surveillance video footage to Kakavelos that appears to undermine parts of Kakavelos’ account, in which he said another shop employee, James Duffy, was entirely responsible for the killing, and Kakavelos played only a passive role.

Kakavelos, the owner of the Local No. 9 Smokehouse and Substation in Johnstown, is on trial for first-degree murder, conspiracy and tampering with evidence, based on a charge that he hired Duffy, 35, to kill the 22-year-old Lamont. The victim was killed at the Johnstown shop on Oct. 28, 2019, and her body found three days later in a shallow grave near Northway Exit 13 in the Saratoga County town of Malta.
