Jury in Kakavelos murder trial focused on video images

Jurors who are deliberating Thursday in the first-degree murder trial of Georgios Kakavelos have re-watched video footage of the defendant on the night 22-year-old Allyzibeth Lamont was fatally bludgeoned in Kakavelos’ Johnstown deli.

The Saratoga County jury have also reheard portions of testimony from both Kakavelos and deli employee Jimmy Duffy, the man that prosecutors allege Kakavelos paid $1,100 to $1,300 to kill Lamont inside the Local No. 9 sandwich shop on Oct. 28, 2019.

The panel of eight women and four men, which deliberated for about two hours Wednesday, requested the information in six notes to County Judge James A. Murphy III late Wednesday afternoon.

Jurors asked to watch security footage that night, taken from a nearby business about 9:42 p.m., that showed a car pulling up behind the Local No. 9 deli. First Assistant District Attorney Alan Poremba said it was the images of Kakavelos and Duffy loading the body of Lamont behind the business into Kakavelos’ black Volkswagon Passat.

Poremba confronted Kakavelos with security images taken at the Walmart that show Kakavelos casually strolling down aisles. Kakavelos purchased a car magazine and an Almond Joy candy bar while he said he was in fear for his life. The image of Kakavelos leaving the Walmart was among the video requested by the jury.

Thanks for keeping us updated on what's going on.

Oh dear God, please jurors, don't get this wrong. Allyzibeth Lamont deserves full Justice. MOO, Georgios Kakavelos is the man responsible for putting her murder in motion. He ordered it, and he took part in all of it. He's been caught in lies in the courtroom right before your eyes. Prayers for Allyzibeth and all who loved her to see Justice done.

"Prosecutors alleged that the motive for the killing was financial. Lamont filed a complaint against Kakavelos for paying employees under the table, the Times Union reported, citing trial testimony. Lamont also planned to further complain to the defendant’s wife and on social media. Kakavelos allegedly did not keep appropriate business records and owed the government a lot of money: $70,000 to the federal Internal Revenue Service and $122,000 to the State of New York. He had also filed for bankruptcy, the Gazette said."

“Kakavelos could ill afford an investigation into his finances,” the newspaper said in a summary of the prosecutor’s arguments, “so he killed Lamont to forever silence her.”

“We teach our children to speak up when something is not right,” First Assistant District Attorney Alan Poremba said of Lamont. “That’s exactly what she did. She spoke up when things weren’t right. She just happened to speak up to the wrong individual — and that wrong individual was Georgios Kakavelos, who was willing to commit this heinous, barbaric crime.”
