ADMIN NOTE:

This thread is being moved up into the Crimes in the News forum.

As with any crime discussion, posts must be related to the case at hand, which is the Donald Trump indictment
Members are expected to post respectfully and stay on topic
Political commentary is not allowed (i.e. no delving into the Dems, the Reps, the Bidens, Obamas, the Hilarys and every other political person or event in the history of mankind)
No linking to opinion articles. WSers can form their own opinions without relying on zillions of opinions from cyberspace

ADMIN NOTE:

In other cases where an individual is indicted/charged we aren't questioning a DA's motivation being other than within the law. Posts constantly echoing the terms "politically motivated" and "witch hunt" are being removed as politicizing. Saying something over and over again may be your opinion but that doesn't make it true and we aren't here to hammer our own opinion time and again into the minds of others.

Also, reference to possible unrelated crimes committed by others is moot. This discussion is about the indictment against Donald Trump, and as in fishing, you never caught the ones that got away. (Just like this thread .. we may have missed some along the way, but we caught the others :))

Thread is open again.

These charges -- JMOO -- will almost ensure his reelection.

Trump thrives on negative media attention.

If the media would just stop covering him -- he'd fade away into obscurity.
I am not so sure the general electorate will vote him in office- His base will vote for him of course, but is it enough to get him elected president? maybe not

The most important thing is that he must not be allowed to run for any office in the government but right now they say if he is indicted or even convicted for any of these crimes, he can still run for, and be elected to the presidency (God forbid)
A convicted felon can’t vote in many states but they can still be President.

Only if he's convicted. That's how our justice system works. And, if he is, he'll pay his fines and go his way.

The FEC opted not to pursue fines and I think that's going to play a role.

That said, if he intentionally did something illegal, he should be held accountable. I just don't think this is going to fly.
Agree. However, since I am not and will never be a juror in Manhattan, I can render my meaningless verdict of guilty.....jmo

The way I see it is .. Michael Cohen admitted his guilt in the matter. and paid the penalty. Because, as a lawyer, he knew they had the proof.
That proof leads back to DT (repayments) Repayments that were evidently fraudulently put through as business expenses.

I am not seeing any reason why Cohen paid for his crimes, and Trump gets a pass.
I think if both your lawyer and your acountant are in jail, that is not good for you. For someone considered to be naive in business matters, that person might say s/he relied on their expertise, but after you write a book called "The Art of the Deal," it starts to look as if you had a hand in the situation. IMO the so-called affairs are a "tip of the iceberg" with this person. As to why people vote for him, well, some people might pick an "agent" that is considered slick or deceptive or manipulsative if they believed that that the "agent" was acting in their best interest despite whatever tactics the "agent" was using. That is how I see it, IMO.

You might want to read the letter--I posted it earlier.

The letter you posted was not by the FEC, it was by two of the commissioners only, two of the Republicans. Again, it means nothing.

Even if it was the from the full commission, it still means nothing because he's not being charged with campaign violations.

The front pages of most UK newspapers were covered with photos of Trump as he appeared in court. Some used catchy headlines, such as “Trump in the eye of the Stormy” in the Mirror and “Trump in the dock” in The Times.

And that is why DT and his cohorts keep drumming into his base that "DT is the only person standing between you and them" "They want to do this to you, but DT is stopping them" or other similar phrases. imo

I notice a heck of a lot of references about how they will come for 'you' but DT can stop them. And I have been noticing it for years. He is the only one who can save the US from total anarchy, madness, and chaos.

Bring out the violins!

GOP Senator Lindsey Graham fought back tears while begging Fox News viewers to donate money to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign following his arrest.

During an emotional appearance on Sean Hannity’s eponymous program Hannity on Tuesday night, the South Carolina senator begged viewers to donate money to Trump’s campaign to ensure the United States does “not become a banana republic.”

“We got one last chance here to straighten this out,” Graham said in an appearance on “Hannity,” adding, “2024 is the most important election in my lifetime. America is literally at stake as we know it.”

“Please help President Trump,” he continued. “If you can afford 5 or 10 bucks, if you can’t afford a dollar, fine. Just pray. Make sure you vote as early as you can in your state. Don’t risk anything anymore. Vote as soon as you can. Pray for this country, pray for this president, and if you got any money to give, give it.”

RBBM - don't forget socialism and "wokeism"

That is a loop hole that should have been addressed years ago- now is a good time to address it
They would have to change the constitution which is no easy task.
There is no provision in the constitution regarding criminality, as long as the POTUS is at least 35 years of age, a natural born citizen and a U.S. resident for at least 14 years they are good to go.

“It’s pretty widely accepted that the list of qualifications in the Constitution is exclusive — that is, Congress or states can’t add qualifications to those listed in the Constitution”
Can a convicted felon become a U.S. president?

Convicted felons can be elected to Congress too, even if they are in prison.
Our votes are powerful.
Matthew Lyon ran for Congress from prison in 1798 and won. He took his seat in Congress after serving four months in prison for “libeling” President John Adams.
The house had a vote to expel him but failed.

The GOP didn't have enough hardcore Trump supporters in 2020, which is why he lost. His daily, chaotic, divisive rhetoric is the reason. Trump's response? The election was stolen. Solution: his "Patriot" lemmings attacked the Capitol. He still insists it was stolen and has continued to viciously attack anybody in his own party who disagrees.

I think Trump's arrest today, and his refusal to take accountability for his actions including his continuing lies, is going to be the last straw
for any voter with common sense.
BBM IMO there will be those voters that of course will remain loyal but if the election were held today I believe he loses - again. The energy yesterday was sucked out of the room.

IMO From the look on Trump's face and his body language and demeanor yesterday in NYC, Trump knows he is in deep "doo-doo". I don't believe he ever thought this moment would come. And he knows there are more moments to come.
IMO he feels vulnerable and betrayed by his friends and maybe even some family. Curious why I did not hear a peep or see Ivanka or Melania yesterday? I believe Pecker, Hope and/or KellyA dropped a "dime" on DT - gave Bragg info to tie up loose ends.
IMO everything in that indictment was just Trump being Trump and business as usual. Running for president in 2016 was his unraveling not his crowning glory.
All just my opinion

Maybe it’s simply about policy. imo

In the video from 2018, the then-president can be seen talking to reporters on Air Force One.

Mr Trump, when questioned about the $130,000 hush payment made by his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to Ms Daniels, denies the allegations.

A reporter can be heard asking Mr Trump if he knew about the payment to Ms Daniels to which Mr Trump replies: “No.”

He was then asked why Mr Cohen paid her if the allegations weren’t true.

“You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael’s my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael,” Mr Trump responded.

When asked further if he knew where the $130,000 came from, he said: “No, I don’t know.”

The problem includes the fact that two election laws are involved. One is New York State law 17-152 against promoting a candidacy through unlawful means. The other is the federal limit against campaign donations above $2,700.

In a nutshell: Trump created a false paper trail to hide facts from voters, and he did so in violation of those two election laws, which makes it a crime.
LOL, It is always the coverup that gets them IMO

Trump thrives on negative media attention.

If the media would just stop covering him -- he'd fade away into obscurity.
Or stop investigating and charging him.

Clear example: all the discussion about his taxes... why doesn't he turn over his taxes? what's he hiding in his taxes? Every other presidential candidate has turned over their taxes, why hasn't he? Finally his taxes are made public and what happened - nothing. All of this only emboldens him. I said it earlier, he would have been gone a long time ago if he weren't constantly being attacked or investigated and with nothing coming of it.
