Schaeffer maintains his innocence and said he never met Wolfe but he did meet Wolfes son years later. They spoke about what the state accused Schaeffer of doing. From that meeting, a friendship emerged.
We are friends now, Schaeffer said. We talked a lot about the case, and he looked me right in the face and told me he knew I didnt do any of these things.
The chief told the media he is also asking for the person or persons who are responsible for Barbara Miller's death to come forward before he "rips the house down."
Tim Miller also said he believes more than one person was involved in the disappearance and death of Barbara Miller.
MILTON — Investigators plan to raise tarps around 751 N. Front St. and block visibility of the duplex as the third day of a cold case search for the remains of Barbara Miller progresses.
On Sunday, investigators took the day off to clear their minds and prepare for Monday when the investigating team led by Chief Miller, Milton Police Chief Curt Zettlemoyer and Northumberland County Coroner Jim Kelley will return to the scene to continue to dig for evidence.
"It is both physically and emotionally exhausting to bare the weight of our communities search for answers," Chief Miller said Sunday.
The investigation has remained fluid and has been continuing through this weekend. While we took this time to decompress, we did not rest and we will not rest until we rule out this location with certainty. We will resume tomorrow even more determined and will be pushing even harder, he said.
The focus remains inside the basement and inside a hole dug on the outside of the North Front Street structures southeast corner after seven cadaver dogs all "hit" for odors of human decomposition in the area.
Thats where investigators used heavy equipment to extract and inspect a multi-ton concrete basement wall Friday. The wall was removed in three pieces, the largest of which was 24 inches at its thickest point, 6 feet wide and weighing more than 3 tons.
The slabs of concrete were loaded onto a rollback container and will be examined by forensic specialists.
According to a search warrant, Millers remains are suspected either to be entombed or buried beneath the wall removed or a second basement wall of similar size and construction.
There are several people we will be visiting to talk with, Chief Miller said. Instead of me going to them, they should just come to me. There is no doubt in my mind the person or persons involved with this case are watching the news and reading the newspapers. I ask you, call me anytime of the day or night to talk."
Were taking it very cautiously, looking at every speck of dirt, anything that could be possible evidence, Miller said in brief comments to assembled media. Obviously, someone somewhere along the line did something and made a mistake. Im looking for that mistake.
Everybody that commits a crime makes a mistake, he said.
More than a week after a six-day dig at a Milton home for the remains of Barbara Miller, the case remains "active and progressive," Sunbury Police Chief Tim Miller said Thursday.
Tim Miller, who is not related to Barbara Miller, who has been missing for 28 years, vowed on Thursday to continue the investigation but said he cannot release much information on the dig, which began June 8.
"We are in the process of researching experts in various fields and have spoken to several renowned professionals in regard to this case," he said. "But I will not release any more information at this time."
Police Chief Timothy S. Miller, who is no relation to the victim, would not say who he has interviewed but Tuesday said it has not been either Joseph Walter "Mike" Egan or Harry Catherman.
Miller said he has not received a report back from the lab on the "potential evidence" found in the duplex cellar during four days of digging.
He would not disclose what was found or if it was being tested for DNA.
No attempt has yet been made to chip into pieces of an 18-inch thick concrete wall removed from the cellar, the chief said. Seven cadaver dogs gave an indication of human remains in that area.
Chief Timothy S. Miller Thursday said Joseph Walter "Mike" Egan agreed to meet with him as part of the investigation into the 1989 disappearance of Barbara E. Miller.
The chief would not relate what was discussed but he described Egan as being cordial.
He says he wants to clear his name and the chief said he told him they would talk further when he has an attorney. Egan denies killing Miller.
