10:18 a.m. — Murdaugh's sentencing is underway. Federal prosecutors and Murdaugh's defense team will argue how his previous sentences in state court should affect Gergel's decision.

Why are we not surprised that AM once again thought he was the smartest guy in the room and did and will continue to lie and manipulate until he breathes his last breath? The truth is not in the DNA of that family, even the survivors! JMO.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — UPDATE: 10 A.M. - Alex Murdaugh is back in the courtroom. Soon he will learn if he ever has a chance of leaving prison. First, United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel will decide if U.S. Attorney's Office can nullify their plea agreement with Murdaugh. "There are many ironies in this case," Gergel said. Federal Prosecutors began with discussing a restitution submitted to the court and probation office. The total restitution amount is $8,762,731.88. Federal prosecutors are pushing hard for a consecutive sentence. This would essentially be a life sentence for Murdaugh. Murdaugh's Attorney Jim Griffin then requested for the sentence to run concurrently with the State's sentence and said Murdaugh is already serving 2 life sentences for murder. "Where we are in this courtroom is the result of a turf war between the Attorney General of South Carolina and US Attorney of South Carolina," Griffin said. Murdaugh just stood up to address Judge Gergel

Murdaugh will pay $8.7M to financial crimes victims

10:46 a.m. Gergel asked federal prosecutors to outline the restitution Murdaugh will be ordered to pay to the victims of his financial crimes.
Prosecutor Emily Limehouse provided the total number: $8.7 million. Murdaugh didn't object.

The money will be divvied up among several victims. Around $4.5 million will go to Murdaugh's former law firm. Palmetto State Bank, which Murdaugh used to funnel stolen money through, will get nearly $330,000.

He will pay about $13,000 to Pamela Pinckney, whom Murdaugh stole from after she hired him to represent her in a personal injury lawsuit. Roughly $3.8 million will go to the insurer that paid the family of Gloria Satterfield.

The Murdaugh family's longtime housekeeper died in 2018 after injuries she sustained from a fall. Murdaugh admitted to lying to his insurers and forcing them to make a settlement payout to Satterfield's family, which he then stole.

11:10 A.M. - Judge Gergel handed down Murdaugh's sentence of 480 months to run concurrent with state charges. "I've never seen this type of conduct, a massive fraud over many years," Judge Gergel said. Judge Gergel said Murdaugh's criminal conduct happened over 15 years. He said there was a total of 27 clients that became victims, and said Murdaugh stole a total of nearly 11 million dollars. Murdaugh was ordered to pay $8,762,731.88 in restitution.

Glad for augmented sentence but just for extra security wish it were consecutive [… added] but I guess if he got out at age 90-something, big deal.

Where will Alec get the $8.7 million to pay victims? Aren’t all the funds we know about either spoken for or used up? I would say paying out some $8million should completely break him so wonder how he will continue to pay his defense team?

Guess we should be watching for any of his remaining minions digging up jars on all those barrier islands he owned or in the late Miss Libby’s back lot. ;) ;)

Disbarred Hampton, S.C., lawyer Richard Alexander “Alex” Murdaugh was sentenced to 480 months, or 40 years, in federal prison, in connection with a sweeping decade-plus, multi-million-dollar financial fraud crime spree that engulfed more than a score of victims in multiple S.C. Lowcountry counties.

This term will run concurrently with Murdaugh's state prison terms. He is currently serving a pair of life sentences for the June 2021 murders of his wife and son, and 27 years for similar S.C. State Grand Jury fraud charges.
