DEADWOOD — A preliminary cause of death has been determined in the case of a Spearfish man found nearly three months after he went missing.

The Lawrence County Coroner’s Office has preliminary determined that Christopher Oien, 28, died from hypothermia as a result of exposure. The cause of death is pending with toxicology reports still out. It typically takes weeks for these reports to be finalized.

I have heard from several sources that he had won money. It would be very easy to tell whether this was an accident or manslaughter if he had in fact won money, and it was gone. Only the casino and the investigators will know that I guess.

About Williams street, it is a very steep hill, and it leads away from the casinos and main street. I can't see why anyone would willingly choose to go that direction. Even if being pursued by someone, that would be the worst way to go. To get to where he was found, he would have had to walk nearly the entire way up a very sharp incline, then wade thru very deep snow.

The only way I can see him ending up where he did by his own free will, was if there was a sudden snow flurry and he got disoriented (it was clear that night) or if for some reason he was trying to walk back to spearfish. But that doesn't make sense why he would leave his hotel and vehicle to walk 15-20 miles home.

There's also the article of clothing the police found in their search area. Unless it was a dropped glove or something, I don't see how that would have happened without there having been an altercation of some sort.

None of it makes sense. The very odd behavior, the fact that he didn't take the vehicle, and walked instead. It makes me wonder if he hadn't been kidnapped around 1:30 when the police got a phone call about him, and the person in the footage shown walking up Williams isn't one of the kidnappers wearing his coat and hat, as a way of making it look like Oien went that way on his own free will and that his death was accidental.
