Search continues for Nelson teen as investigation details emerge

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Taylor’s home the afternoon of Aug. 6, roughly six hours before Alexis’s car was found in the Carmike Six Cinema parking lot just off U.S. 29 in Albemarle County last Tuesday.

Taylor’s list of criminal convictions stretches back more than 20 years.

RE:Alexis Murphy case

FROM:ANTHONY MARTIN, COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY
CONTACT:434-263-7010
An advisement hearing for Randy Allen Taylor, who is charged with abduction in the Alexis Murphy case, was held this afternoon in the Nelson County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court.
Judge Kenneth W. Farrar appointed P. Scott DeBruin of Lynchburg, Virginia, to represent Taylor on the abduction charge. Taylor’s next appearance, a preliminary hearing, will be held in the Nelson County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court on January 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
The preliminary hearing will only determine whether there is probable cause to send the case to the Nelson County Circuit Court Grand Jury for trial.
Taylor remains held without bail at this time.

But it was who some people did not see at Lovingston's Liberty gas station, the last documented place Alexis was seen, that raised eyebrows.

On Monday, the FBI released a photo of the vehicle driven by Taylor -- a late model GMC Suburban with camouflage detail.

"They described the truck, and I knew exactly who they were talking about," said Nelson County resident John Callahan.

Callahan, who frequently visits the gas station, says it was not unusual to see Taylor parked near the station's 'Air Vac' machine. Callahan says, in the last week or so, Taylor and his camo ride have also been noticeably absent.

"It’s kind of a shock to get a call that there’s some FBI agents wanting to talk to you," Bennett said. "My part-timer recognized him from the Daffy Duck tattoo on his neck, because there aren’t too many people walking around with a cartoon character on their neck. He just purchased some movies."

An employer and acquaintances of Taylor’s described him as a quiet, hardworking man, who kept mostly to himself working off and on at a local used car lot.

We knew he had a past, because he’d been honest with us," Taylor’s employer, Tere Vann, said Monday at the Ruckersville car lot where he’s worked off and on for the past five years.

Does anyone know if RAT was currently working at the car lot when he was arrested this time? His employer stated he worked there on & off. Looked at their website but it doesn't show much info. In working at a car lot, wouldn't this give him access to lots of different cars/keys & possibly a tow truck?

You know they say that these perps like to go back to the scene or put bodies & such in locations where they can keep an eye on them. Was looking at the map from the car lot site & John Rucker Lake kind of stands out & isn't to far from the lot: http://www.drive-away-motors.com/hours.htm

Bruce Johnson says this week isn't the first time he's seen Taylor - or his camo-wrapped suburban in town. Johnson says he's seen Taylor in the Lovingston Food Lion parking lot, just sitting and watching people.

"He was just sitting in that parking lot watching and that kind of was strange to me too. He was sitting in the parking lot and he just sat in the vehicle. I went in the store, got what I got and came out - he was still sitting in the vehicle," Johnson said.

"BREAKING: Randy Taylor, the man arrested in the abduction of Alexis Murphy is now under the microscope, as investigators see if he can be linked to the deaths or disappearance of several women, dating back almost 20 years. Tonight, sources in Charlottesville are reporting he has been ruled out as a suspect in the 1996 murder of Alicia Showalter Reynolds. He was reportedly in jail at the time of her disappearance.

The great-aunt of missing Nelson County teenager Alexis Murphy said she recognized from a photo the man arrested in connection with her daughter's disappearance.
Trina Murphy said looking at a photo on Monday with her family jolted her memory back about three years, when she was purchasing a used car in Ruckersville.
“I thought, ‘I really know this guy,’” Trina Murphy said. “I bought a car from the lot he worked at.”
Murphy said she recalls seeing Randy Allen Taylor, 48, of Lovingston, wash and clean the new-to-her car before she drove it off the lot.
“It’s really kind of creepy,” she said. “When I figured out he washed my car, I realized he was right there. Three years later, he abducts my niece. It’s freaky.”
Murphy said several members of her large extended family recalled seeing Taylor and his gray GMC suburban-style truck around town, but didn’t think anyone had ever had a conversation with him or gotten to know him.
“How long was he watching her?” Murphy wondered about her niece. “I feel like he’s been watching her for a long time.”

Also from your link..

Authorities removed two vehicles – a late-model gray GMC suburban-style truck and an older-looking blue and white camper – from the property on Monday.

Taylor lived in the trailer and ran power from the house to his home, said the owner of the 19-acre plot, Margaret Turner, who is the grandmother of Taylor’s teenage son.

The couple broke up when their son was a toddler and he lived with Taylor for years before moving in with his mother, she said.
The pair are on good terms and share time with their son, who was with Taylor all day the Monday after Murphy went missing, Turner said.

“What in the world is happening, I don’t know,” she said. “[His son] is crazy about his dad and his daddy loves him, I know that.”

K-9 units are also searching the Taylor's property. They've been sniffing around the house and back into the woods along Route 29.

The FBI is on the property with four wheelers to head back into the densely wooded area behind Taylor's home.

Local, state and federal law enforcement have remained tight-lipped about the investigation. Mays declined to name specifically where authorities searched Tuesday, but said investigators were continuing to follow tips and had been searching “several locations.”
