GUILTY Canada - Johnny Altinger, 38, lured to his death, Edmonton, AB, 10 Oct 2008

What is that saying again, a man who cheats also lies and possibly worse...
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/story/2011/04/12/edmonton-twitchell-jury-charged.html
But in other ways the author does not fit the profile of a serial killer, he said.

"I do not con or prey on my family members or friends. I never hurt animals as a child either."

But he admits to cheating regularly on his wife, who he describes as "an excellent mother to our child, and the greatest partner that anyone could ever ask for."

"I still cheat, but only for the thrill of it," he said.

EDMONTON - A book to be penned by a former Edmonton journalist is expected to have even more shocking details about aspiring movie director Mark Twitchell and the gruesome murder of John Altinger, said its author Steve Lillebuen, who recently signed the book deal with Toronto-based publisher McClelland & Stewart, says the book will include details about the highly profiled murder trial that has garnered international media attention.

Thankfully, a good and just verdict ... sadly no verdict can ever bring the victim back into the lives of those who loved him.

Rest in Peace, Johnny Altinger

Here is an article that gives us some more information about personality of the victim. What a tremendous loss for his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Keep your eyes on the Edmonton Journal as they promise "Saturday, The Journal goes deep into the police investigation of Altinger’s disappearance." I always find that aspect of any case fascinating.

First, Twitchell was found guilty after only five hours of jury deliberation, largely a function of the overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution. Second, the efficient work of 112 police officers investigating Altinger's disappearance stopped what might have been a series of murders, according to a chilling document found on Twitchell's laptop that outlined possible future victims

I as well was able to watch this. A very strange case but kudo's to the detective. Normally, I am certain that this would not even received much of a glance. Can't wrap my head around the story yet but I am of the opinion that he would of continued killing

The case of killer Mark Twitchell of Edmonton Alberta, who wrote and began producing a movie about a man who lured someone to act in a movie only to make him the real victim. Twitchell did exactly that. Posing as a woman, he lured a man online, and then killed him, right where he was filming his movie. Partial remains of the victim were found in a sewer.

This psychopath's case is on CBC's Fifth Estate tonight at 9:00 EST.

Here is a link to a document he wrote, where he self-analyzes his psychopathic nature.

The original thread to this case, from the trial earlier this year, is here:

In Mark Twitchell's self-analysis document he wrote (after saying that he had some symptoms of a psychopath, but not all):

I do not con or prey on my family members and friends. I am not a leech that charms them out of their money and then never pays it back. I'm actually quite high functioning and have managed to develop and produce a feature film that will allow me to stand on my own very comfortably in this regard. I never hurt animals or a child either.

Of course in the next paragraph he says that he is a pathological liar. Later he admitted that he conned a mortgage company out of a loan and later he admitted he conned his wife into believing that he was not cheating on her and that he had a regular job. (But working in a regular job would be an 'unbearable servitude'.)

Later he says:
My whole life I've always just done whatever the hell I wanted without any consideration for anyone else and it's never bothered me. I don't experience things like remorse or guilt.

<snip>
I don't feel that taking someone else's life is worth the loss of my freedom, or the amount of time, energy and expense one has to put out in order to conduct such acts. It has absolutely nothing to do with the respect for human life or the empathy for a would be victims family. My reservation centers entirely around the fact it's an experience like smoking or doing drugs that I simply have never carried an interest in. A hobby that detracts from the rest of my life.

<snip>
...I direct my dark energies into my film work, writing, producing and directing a short suspense thriller that not only satisfies my fantasies in a solid form, but does it lawfully and without harming anyone. The other major upside to this outlet of course is exposure and profit. As a producer I can profit from the sale and distribution of my work, but as a serial killer I would get nothing more than a quick rush of adrenaline and a prison sentence to follow.

So, he proceeded to kill someone (after a thwarted attempt a week earlier). I guess he was confident that he could beat the prison sentence!

Here is the link to the Fifth Estate page. The full episode is only available to be viewed by those in Canada, although I see that some of the supplementary videos and materials don't have that limitation, including a video interview of a couple of professors on the dangers of online dating. (Twitchell used Plenty of Fish to lure his victims.)

Now that closing arguments are over, the "omission" that I alluded to, and haven't seen covered in any testimony or cross-examination:

Um, so if this wasn't at all planned ?? ... after Altinger supposedly attacked Twit with a pipe, and before his victim died, is this when he elicited all Johnny's email passwords, home address, etc from the dying man?

I assumed that Twitchell took Altinger's keys, that he got the address from the vehicle registration, and simply drove Altinger's car to Altinger's apartment, and that he then logged onto the accounts using saved passwords.

I'm about 3/4s of the way through reading a book on this case called "The Devil's Cinema." Very interesting and chilling. For some reason, even though I live in Canada, I hadn't heard anything about this case at the time.

Edmonton cops refuse to give back amateur films to killer Mark Twitchell

By Matt Dykstra,Edmonton Sun

First posted: Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Notorious killer Mark Twitchell tried to reclaim the amateur films he made with friends that were seized by police during the 2008 homicide investigation.

In August, a “filmmaker friend” of Twitchell’s was turned away from the Edmonton Police Service property control room after asking for the films on Twitchell’s behalf, said Staff Sgt. Bill Clark with the service’s homicide unit.

“These exhibits were seized as evidence in Twitchell’s homicide trial so they’re not going to simply be released to his friend just because he sent someone there,” explained Clark".

This is just beyond disturbing to me, on many levels.

The man who used a dating site to lure his victim to an Edmonton garage before killing and dismembering him is now using a dating site for inmates.

In his profile on Canadian Inmate Connect, Mark Twitchell writes, "I'm looking for an interesting, intelligent, open-minded, delightfully imperfect woman to relate to and share amusing observations with ... as well as potentially a long weekend every few months if it gets there naturally."

In 2011, Twitchell was convicted of the 2008 first-degree murder of Johnny Altinger. Twitchell dismembered Altinger and dumped his remains in a north Edmonton sewer.

A new British documentary series is pulling back the curtain on the aspiring Edmonton serial killer and Star Wars geek Mark Twitchell.
Twitchell — currently serving a life sentence — set up a honey trap on the dating website Plenty of Fish.
Johnny Altinger was murdered and dismembered by the wannabe sci-fi auteur.
Gilles Tetreault was luckier and told his story on My Online Nightmare on Britain's Channel 4.

Just saw the story of how the sicko psychopath murdered John Altinger. This creep could get out of prison in 2036- he will only be 57 years old- I believe he will always be a danger - Do they have life in prison in Canada?
