The gunman who opened fire on Fort Stewart Army Base in southeast Georgia has been identified as
Quornelius Radford, law enforcement sources say.

The Army sergeant opened fire on the base, shooting five soldiers and prompting a brief lockdown at one the country's largest Army bases, officials said.

The gunman - identified by law enforcement sources as Quornelius Radford - allegedly struck five soldiers the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area of the base, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

Haven't heard of any casualties so far.
Horrible.

Thinking about the wounded at this time and praying they pull through !!

Thought military personnel couldn't 'carry' on base ?
Or can sergeants and officers above that level carry their weapons.

Under investigation is how he got a personal hand gun onto the premises

Some more links :

What We Know About the Suspect

  1. Quornelius Radford is an Army sergeant.
  2. He is 28 years old.
  3. He has prior ties to Florida.
  4. He was previously arrested in May during a traffic stop for driving under the influence, according to CNN.
  5. He opened fire Wednesday morning at 10:56 a.m. in the area assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2nd ABCT). He was taken into custody at 11:35 a.m.
I heard at the press conference that prior DUI from May was unknown to his chain of command until this incident.

I wanted to note that because it might come up as a reason for him doing this, but if his COC didn't know then there was no disciplinary action for this DUI yet.

There is a bit of a disconnect between a soldier getting in trouble off base and if they do not need to report for duty or otherwise be seen for a time, then being arrested and released would not be known to their COC or anyone on base. Sometimes local LE do call someone, but sometimes they do not. Now if someone gets a DUI on post, it's immediately known to their COC. There can be serious consequences for a DUI for servicemembers so he could have feared they would find out or whatever was going on in his life to cause him to drink and drive might have been spiraling and caused this also.

At a rank of sergeant, he wasn't a newbie recruit (A private or private first class ? Sorry I'm not sure about rankings.) who snapped and decided he wanted out.
I'm wondering if it was a personal vendetta against some or all of whom he shot ?
Thank god they all survived !

What an evil act to commit amongst those who --in a battle situation or even just training exercise-- would probably have your back ?

oh no zero carry on base.

I live on an Army base and my husband is a military police officer in the Army.

Those living on base can have their personal firearms in their residence and they need to be registered on base and stored in your home. For soldiers living in the barracks, they register their weapons and store them in the arms room. They are not allowed to store their personal firearms in their barracks rooms (sorta like a college dorm room). Hunting and shooting at the ranges or removing your firearms to go off base to utilize a range or to hunt are allowed and we are supposed to declare our weapons when we enter the base. This is no issue if they are stored in a case and the ammo is store separate from the weapon in the vehicle and again you must decare that you have your weapons and where they are. Then you return them to your home and store them.

No servicemembers are authorized to carry any personal firearm around during the work day. Only military police are armed and current local on duty LEOs can also carry on base.

So I'd say he either lived on base and just brought a gun from his house or if he lived off base he drove through the gate and didn't declare the weapon and just proceeded to do what he did.

He was legally aloud on base and likely just scanned in like every other day.

Nope a SGT is an E5 and likely was in the Army for 4 years or more. Most start at E1 or E2 and work their way up. E3 is Private first class (PFC), then E4 is specialist and E5 is SGT, which is the first non-commissioned officer (NCO) rank. This rank sees an increase in responsibility.

I am going to go with this being a workplace situation since he carried it out at his work and not a random place on Fort Stewart.

I noted at the press conference they said he was never deployed. There are still many soldiers struggling with mental health issues that aren't related to a deployment so maybe something going on there and add in a perceived workplace thing. This is my guess. All IMO

Thank you @justtrish for this informative post.
I greatly admire your husband, you and your family for all you sacrifice for our country.

This is so shameful, attacking your peers on an army base.

Thank the Lord all survived.

Really disappointing.

On another thread, we discussed this age being a difficult one. About the same age as Kohberger in Idaho and McGann in Arkansas.

On CNN right now, with Jake Tapper, the chyron says that the shooter had a “disagreement with one victim.”

Much more will be forthcoming, I imagine, but it sounds to me like another “injustice collector.”

As to why he shot multiple people, that is yet to be revealed.

Jake is asking a military intelligence officer if security procedures on bases need to be re-examined.

That is odd since the MI corps has nothing to do with base security.

Then I may have misheard his title, or possibly it’s a case of getting whichever talking-head, knowledgeable military person they could gather on short notice .

The operative part, to me, is that it seems that this man had a problem with one person and yet shot five people on base.

So many other people have to suffer when someone is hanging onto a grudge.

imo
