Regarding the comment below in the article you posted (SOURCE).

She had been deceased for some time as rigor mortis had set in, the affidavit said.

Rigor starts ~2 hrs after death and moves through the body until the entire body is then stiff. So, the mother had either been gone at least 2 hrs after her death, and we know she didn't walk out the house the exact moment of death so add more hours to how long they were left alone. Also, that whole process starting from ~2 hrs after death, tp 24-36 hrs later... that's WAY too long to leave young children alone.

Rigor mortis appears approximately 2 hours after death in the muscles of the face, progresses to the limbs over the next few hours, completing between 6 to 8 hours after death. [10] Rigor mortis then stays for another 12 hours (till 24 hours after death) and then disappears.

The overall timeline of rigor mortis under ordinary conditions is as follows:
  • 0-8 hours: Body begins to harden but is still movable
  • 8-12 hours: Muscles become fully stiff
  • 12-24 hours: Muscles stay solid and stiff
  • 24-36 hours: Stiffness disperses, and muscles become flexible

According to court records, Skylar's multiple injuries included bruising over most of her body, bite marks on her back and arm, frostbite on her hands and feet, and a puncture wound near her neck, possibly caused by a rodent after her death
