I spent most of yesterday checking the beaches in Portugal, the only ones I couldn't rule out were those that have no street view or photos attached to google maps. That is why I decided to start looking at Germany, it was reported in the media but not sure who/where as someone else mentioned...

I'm pretty certain that the WF picture was not taken in the area inland. I have scanned all of the beach car parks that I can access on street view and one thing I notice is that the fencing at all of them if there is any are mostly the same log type fencing. The trees and grass in the picture...

I think you could be correct!

Actually the more I look at Barracol the more I am convinced the WF picture was not taken there, the earth is red and there is a distinct lack of sand.

Has anyone here managed to locate the scrap yard in Barrocal on google maps? I think I might have found a place that fits but obviously my map is recent. Unfortunately, in street view there is a lorry that blocks the view of the property. I wonder if anyone here could access an earlier...

It is parked on very smooth sand, not gravel and I can't see reeds at the car park in Foral but plenty of trees. ETA... there is a low fence with metal bars to the posts and the reeds are very distinctive imo, you usually get them where rain runs off down into the sea or alongside a river in...

I moved to Spain in August 2007 and if you bought a sim from the local shops you had to fill in a form and show ID such as a passport. I don't know if it was the same in Portugal and cb was also a collector of passports so Im sure he could have got around it anyway.
