Cross-Dressing Elementary School Event Draws Criticism

REEDSBURG, Wisconsin — An elementary-school event in which kids were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite gender drew the ire of a Christian radio group, whose angry broadcast prompted outraged calls to the district office.
Students at Pineview Elementary in Reedsburg had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.
A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.
"We believe it's the wrong message to send to elementary students," said Jim Schneider, the network's program director. "Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error."

i am a christian and very religious and yet the fact that the radio station broadcasted this appalls me. i am sorry but if they wanted God in school they should have kept him there instead of telling us we cant read our bibles or pray! im sorry but thesse school districts have the right to do these wacky days and what not and if the radio stations dont ike it then thats their problem. children are just being children when involving themselves in this now if the teachers were telling these kids point blank "you can dress like this whenever you want its okay" then i might have a problem but they arent!

We have a local school that is alternative. It used to be for problem kids only (when I was a teenager) and the sucess was so great, it's now open to students who choose to go.

One small part of the idea of individualized learning in this school is that there isn't the traditional dress code. There are boys who wear skirts there, and lots of gothicly dressed kids with piercings and what not. The kids excell, those that would, in that kind of environment.

These are kids that don't fit into regular public school. They have dress up day EVERYDAY.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. There isn't any uproar about it here.

That's terrific to hear about.
