ID - John Tuggle for rape, attempted murder of 12yo daughter, Shoshone County, 2005

John Rollins Tuggle, 37, of Hayden traveled to northern Idaho to visit his daughter, whom he had not seen in 10 years because he had been locked up in an Idaho prison, said Sheriff Chuck Reynalds of Shoshone County, Idaho.

On Wednesday, Tuggle told his daughter he was taking her to a mall, but Reynalds said he instead took her to a remote area in the wilderness called the Lost Creek drainage.

She was stabbed all over her body and was near death.

A family that pulled into a nearby campsite heard the girl yelling for help about 1 p.m. She was about 40 yards off in the brush, and it was only by chance that anyone even found her, Reynalds said.

"She could not walk. She was weak," Reynalds said.

The girl had to be carried to the family's camper, and they drove her to an eatery, where they called for help.

Jones said information about what kind of treatment Tuggle got while in prison was not available.

"At that time frame, we did not have a lot of sex-offender treatment," Jones said.

It's not clear if the girl had been allowed to go with her father.

"We have not talked to the mother," Reynalds said. "She is a basket case and has been with her daughter in the hospital room."

Reynalds said he didn't know whether the girl was sexually assaulted during the incident.

"We have not interviewed her yet, and we do not know. We have no idea. Basically what we have done is put her in skilled professional hands," he said. http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_2881245

The girl, whose mother lives in Idaho, was in serious condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., after Wednesday's attack.

Investigators are awaiting test results to determine if she was sexually assaulted.

He said that Tuggle showed up at his ex-wife's house in Athol, north of Coeur d'Alene, about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and told his ex-wife that he hadn't seen his daughter in 10 years and that he wanted to spend time with her.

"He said they were going to go to the mall, but he took her to a remote area instead," the sheriff said.

Investigators believe the attack happened about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The girl was discovered about six hours later.

Last Thursday, John Tuggle told his brother that he was driving out to Idaho to see his kids and that he would be back this past Tuesday.

Chris Tuggle said he has tried repeatedly to contact his brother on his cell phone, but to no avail.

"I did not hear from him, and now we know why," he said.

Chris Tuggle said he was surprised to hear that his brother is accused of trying to kill his daughter.

"I'm a little in shock," he said. "He wasn't a violent person. He just wanted to go see them."

Chris Tuggle, who has children of his own, said he didn't have any concerns about having his brother living with his family in the meantime.

"You can't lump all sex offenders together," he said.

He wasn't a violent person? Okay, 9 years in prison for statuatory rape? Sounds like the brother needs a serious reality check.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the mother without hearing the whole story but there is no way in h#*@ I would let my child go alone anywhere with a freak like that, especially after the daughter hadn't seem him for so many years. She must have been a bit scared in the 1st place to go with a man she hadn't seen in a very long time & then to have him do that to her. I hope they catch him before he gets ahold of any other children!

Just heard on 5 pm news that this creep is still 'out there'. They don't know if he is still up in the woods, or where he might be. His daughter will be spending the next 3-4 weeks recovering from her 5 stab wounds in the hospital. Daddy bound his little girl with rope and the sheriff feels she was left for dead.

It seems the mother did allow the girl to go with her father. She has been in the hospital with the girl, ever since the sheriff's dept notified her.

Apparently, Tuggle also has an 11 yr old son. Why he didn't want to take the son along to the mall would be anyone's guess. Thank God, in hindsight, he didn't. A neighbor was interviewed, who was with the mom when the sheriff's deputy came to notify her of her daughter's demise. The neighbor took the 11yr old son to Coeur d'Alene, to an undisclosed location, to make sure he was kept safe.

News media are making no further mention of her being raped. I am sure that is to protect her identity. It was definitely announced all all three of my local news night before last that he raped and stabbed the little girl.

The case was touched upon by Dan Abrams this afteroon. I wish I had contacted Abrams and Greta yesterday, so that they could have gotten the car description out there earlier. He's probably snatched another set of tags by now, so he wouldn't be so obvious, in that red Ford Escort. (Wish those talking heads would check at websleuths, where posters always seem to be on their toes about these crimes!)

We need for this guy to be caught, before he harms someone else!

If you are within the realm of where this worst father of the year might be, please be sure to alert your local news media, so that they can get his pic and the car description out, in your area.

He now has a goatee, if he hasn't shaved it off.

BOLO for a 1989 Red Ford Escort with COLORADO TAGS 329-JXG

There have been NO TIPS as to where he may be as yet.

There is an additional tip line number now:

or 208-556-1983

or just call 9-1-1!

We need to find this creep before he attacks again!!

Liz, let everyone in your area know to keep their kids out of sight of the street, and keep a close eye on them. We don't want him trying to imitate Duncan by killing a family to get at a kid.

"He came to visit his daughter not seen for 10 years," Shoshone County Sheriff Chuck Reynalds said. "So he came to visit and he [was] supposed to take the young girl to the mall. Instead, he went to the mountains."

"We have the whole world looking for him," Reynalds said. Deputies interviewed the girl in the hospital where she was recovering from her wounds, and they were searching areas where Tuggle has relatives, the sheriff said.

Police said they don't know what led to the attack.

"Anger, alcohol, we have no idea," Reynalds said.

She was stabbed at about 1 p.m. and wasn't found until about five hours later. A family looking for a campsite reportedly heard her calling for help. http://abcnews.go.com/US/LegalCenter/story?id=967064&page=1

Why would the mother let her go with him? thank heavens the boy didn't go, but didn't she think it was odd that he only wanted to take the girl? I hope they catch this guy soon, and this poor little girl she will be in my prayers I can't even imagine how awful it must have been for her.

Just saw the interview on 11 pm news on KHQ with the couple that rescued her, who had their 3 children with them, at the time.

The couple wanted their identities protected, so they just showed the husband and wife holding each others hands. The man said his first thought was that the girl had been attacked by an animal, with all the blood.

Then, the mother said that she was so thankful and just kept thanking them, and didn't stop. The man said as he carried her through the woods to their camper, she just kept saying, "Thank you so much for saving me." .... That poor child! Bless her little heart, for holding on for five hours, after being left for dead by her beastly father. And, that she was even rescued, is just a miracle in my opinion.

I'm so thankful that this family happened to be where they were that evening! God bless them!

A second-degree murder warrant has been issued for a Colorado sex offender accused of stabbing his 12-year-old daughter and leaving her for dead in the Idaho wilderness.

The girl was upgraded from critical to serious condition Friday and is expected to recover in a Spokane, Wash., hospital for several weeks.

Despite a criminal conviction and incarceration for rape, authorities know little about the man being sought in the stabbing of the 12-year-old daughter he had not seen since she was a toddler, Shoshone County Sheriff Chuck Reynalds said Friday.
John R. Tuggle continued to elude a widening dragnet after the girl was found, bound and stabbed, near a northern Idaho campground Late Wednesday.
The girl was stabbed with a pocket knife five times in the upper body and was in serious condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center in nearby Spokane, Wash., Reynalds told a news conference Friday. She was talking to investigators, he said.

The search for Tuggle expanded to other Pacific Northwest states on Friday, and the FBI and Idaho State Police were called in, the sheriff said. ''We're just intensifying everything we're doing,'' Reynalds told The Associated Press.
An exceptional $10 million warrant was issued for Tuggle's arrest because of the severity of the crime and his criminal history, Reynalds said.
''We don't know a lot about this individual,'' Reynalds told reporters Friday. ''We know he's very confident in the outdoors. He's very capable and I think, very dangerous.''
Authorities have no motive for the attack. http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_2883962

This piece of you know what, is still loose, to prey on children, God only knows where.

I think it's time for the feds to offer up a reward, to get people's attention, if nothing else.

Just heard on 6 pm news ...
His daughter is in serious, but stable condition in the hospital; where she will allegedly be for the next 3 weeks or so, recovering from her stab wounds.

Last night the Sheriff did say that the crime was the same one Tuggle was previously incarcerated for .....statutory rape was his previous offense. So without actually saying she was raped, they are saying so.

"There's no new news today," a sheriff's dispatcher said on Saturday.

His daughter is currently at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. The Athol girl could stay in the hospital for about a month. She suffered five stab wounds, from what investigators believe was a pocket knife, in her upper torso from the incident.

since the article says Statuatory rape of the SIL (meaning only that he had sex with someone under the age of 18) (16 in some states)
I wonder if during the divorce the judge ordered that he have visitation?

I am just throwing this out there to answer why the mother may haver permitted it.
Possibly the incident with her sister was simple that the sister was underage and not rape as we all think of it?
NOT that I think that is ok in any way! Still a predator as far as I look at it.

But posssibly he had visitiation rights. Between you and I and the rest of the internet if it where my child it would be over his dead body would her ever see her again court order or not.

MaryKate, many mothers (and many judges) don't seem to "get" it. That a sex offender will under certain circumstances rape anyone.
Media reports that the mother let the girl go with him- to the mall. My guess is the girl may have been curious about him and she may have wanted to go. There is an 11 year old boy too and he didn't go, so I thought maybe it was left up to the kids if they wanted to see him or not.

The court can order visitation but the father's only recourse if the mom doesn't allow it is to fight it out in court. There is no excuse, IMO, for this mom allowing her daughter to go off alone with a sexual predator, whether he's the father or not.

My ex was violent and a heavy drinker. I refused to allow the kids to be alone with him in spite of his court ordered visitation rights. It makes no sense to me that the same court that ordered me to send my kids off with this man would most likely take my kids away from me if I allowed them to go off with a man like him who wasn't their father.

AMEN Sister!
Seems you & I are living the same life. I too was ordered to let my violent ex have visitation rights, even after he admitted to this judge (upon my accusation) that he was a drug user! I was outraged and told the judge that i would not allow it. Period. She said I would be found in contempt of court if I didn't obey the order. I told her I'd gladly pay that fine or do the time becuase she couldn't put a price on my children's safety. He pressed the issue for all of about a month...he was just trying to cause me grief and had no real interest in the children. So needless to say, I believe I was justified in what I did. If you're not going to big your child's biggest advocate, who is? It is certainly proven we cannot trust our judges to make the decision that is "best for the children invovled":snooty: .

Tuggle's red ford escort's been located. He abandoned it somewhere near the Montana border. Sounds like the same general area as where Joe Duncan took the Groene children, except on the Idaho side of the border. Guess he's going to camp out for as long as he's able; or until he can find some family to prey on.
