George Wagner is accused of killing a family of 8 living on a pot farm in Pike County OH. While first thought to be drug related the killings now could be the result of a custody battle. 3 other members of the Wagner family have been arrested as well. The gruesome slayings have rattled this southeast corner of Appalachian Ohio, a region that culturally identifies more closely with neighboring Kentucky and West Virginia than the state’s northern cities.

8:07 am: Deputy Chandler arrived "at a neighboring residence where he was flagged down by a subject. Deputy Chandler advised that he needed multiple ambulances due to multiple down at multiple residences."

"George Wagner III, his wife Angela and their two sons, George IV and Jake, are accused of killing 8 members of the Rhoden family, living in 4 different homes in Pike County, OH. Nearly all the victims were shot at point blank range, while they slept, some with infants and toddlers sleeping nearby.

While first thought to be drug related, Ohio's former Attorney General and current Governor, Mike DeWine says after a full investigation, the killings were the result of Jake Wagner's anger at Hannah Rhoden over custody of their 3 yr old daughter.

Four members of the Wagner family have been arrested on murder and other charges. The grandmothers of Hannah Rhoden's daughters, Rita Jo Newcomb and Fredericka Wagner, have been arrested on charges ranging from forgery to perjury and obstruction of justice.

Thank you, Niner! I'll put this over in the Media & Timelines thread, too. Still a few dates in May. Big upcoming dates will be those for RJN and FW in June, then the trial in July. Hopefully we'll learn a lot more about what happened, what evidence the prosecution has.

Is it possible that RN and FW's trials will be held in a closed courtroom and without the press? I would think that any testimony from either of those trials would have the potential to taint the jury pools for the W4 trials, not to mention revealing information that could hurt the prosecution's case and even hurt the W4's defense strategies. JMO

I am wondering--if it is allowed by law--whether they will have the two grandmother's trials behind closed doors and just allow the public/media into the courtroom once the jury(s) have reached a verdict, like they have in all the pretrial hearings thus far. All the detailed information from the first five trials could be made public once the final trial has concluded. JMO

Good point, Johnny. Yes, my first thought when reading about JW doing electronic monitoring on someone up until May 2017 was that he was monitoring the Wagners, JMO because he was trying to set them up.

Even if LE confiscated their phones, etc. just after the murders, they probably got new ones. They would have to for work and personal business. If JW was hanging around them, he may have been able to do what he needed to hack the new phones/laptops, etc. If LE confiscated JW's phone a second time, hopefully they would have found it. I'm assuming BCI or someone contracted to have the phones and computers checked for hacking, bugs, etc.

I know someone I can ask about this later, so will do so and get back.

IANAL, but by law, trials have to be made public, whether by allowing reporters access, providing transcripts of proceedings, etc.

If information is revealed that could hurt the prosecution's case, then it has to be dealt with by the prosecution in subsequent cases. JMO, I'm sure the defense attorneys will try to throw out a whole school of red herrings to derail the case, but I doubt it's going to make much difference. The Rhodens didn't kill themselves and there's a LOT of damning evidence against the Wagners.

Sorry, I haven't had much luck in getting any of our verified attorneys here at WS to take an interest in this case, so we don't have any answers from legal professionals.

Ok, I asked someone how a criminal could go about hacking someone's cell phone. The person I asked has worked in software security trying to prevent spying on communications. They said if someone knows where to go, they can download apps on the internet they can use to spy on someone. Download the app and use it to send an encrypted message/text to your target. Once they click on it, a program in the "background" will install itself on the victim's phone. The program allows the criminal to have access to all activities on the target's phone as long as the "bug" is installed. They can view texts, hear convos, etc.

It's not necessary for a criminal to have physical access to someone's cell phone or computer to install this hacking "bug". It can be done remotely via an email or other message sent with the "bug" hidden in the message.


This person said, yes, it would be possible for LE to find who planted a spying "bug" on a victim's phone, but it would take someone very skilled. It's the kind of thing BCI or even possibly FBI might contract to an expert.

I'm posting this as JMO, because I'm not planning to ask this person to become a verified member of WS. They just answered the question as a favor to me.

We all know this technology exists these days in our phones, computers, televisions, etc. Various social media sites have the ability to track us everywhere and even listen to private conversations. What's new is that, some level of the same tech capability is also available to anyone on the internet who knows how to find it.
