The court heard the search moved to an area on Batar Creek Rd and the same method was used there. That area was identified based on information gathered by detectives.

Senior Constable Grant Hollis has now taken the stand. He is another Public Order and Riot Squad officer who has extensive search experience, including the search for fugitive Malcolm Naden. He said this was bigger than the search for Naden.

Senior Constable Hollis is now describing the dog grave they found. “It was 30-40m off a walking track and the date itself was the year William Tyrrell had gone missing,” he said. Officers dug up the grave and found a small dog wrapped in blue plastic.

The lawyer for the biological father has raised an issue about paying for his accomodation in Taree when the inquest moves there. The coroner tells the court it “seems wrong the father may not be able to attend” because Legal Aid will not pay for it.

Senior Constable Hollis has been excused and the inquest has been suspended for today. There are no witnesses to be called tomorrow so the inquest will resume on Monday, when they will start “a new phase”.

The second find was another cross, this time white, in a similar area “not too far from the cemetery” but it was not propped up.

The officer told Mr Craddock they did not excavate beneath it.

“It had been there for quite some time,” he said.

“There was nothing that the detectives wanted to investigate.
