I'm sure Dad knows his son better than we do. He probably remembers how he felt about HIS parents at 13! I would rather have been anywhere at 13 than be with my parents.
It is a difficult age.

I don't think they are assuming he ever went fishing.
I'm catching up. Can someone tell me if MR has said the phone was dropped/broken? Where is this idea coming from? TIA
Also, has it been said that the father had WIFI or not? Even if the phone was off (which I do not know too many teens who would ever turn their phone off, even when charging), IF Dylan had an iPod touch, he could have used WIFI and a free texting app and would not need cellular service.
Just jumping off your post...
In CA we have to have a fishing license/permit to go fishing... Even in streams in the Mamoth area...
Is this required in CO..
he reason I ask.. Is I don't imagine Dylan and dad would have had time Sunday night to even get a permit for night fishing/next day fishing?
Just some thoughts...

As soon as Dylan showed up at his father's, he wanted go visit friends. Father had to tell him it was too late, so he then made plans to go visit friends first thing in the morning.

I really don't think it's selfishness so much as just self-centeredness (is that a word?). When my boys were that age they would mope around if forced to go someplace they didn't want to go, or being told they couldn't go someplace that they wanted to go. On the other hand, if I explained to them why it was important to someone else that they go, or why it wasn't possible to go somewhere, they were understanding - most of the time.
I think the problem with 13 year olds is that they're on the verge of becoming adults. They want to test their wings, and their decision-making skills. They want to prove they're independent enough to deserve some freedom, but still want to know someone will be there to back them up if they find they aren't. I believe Dylan may have wanted to go to MR's house so he could see his friends. I'm sure he tried talking him into taking him Sunday night because they were all anxious to see each other, but may have been slightly relieved that MR insisted on him getting some sleep first. I can't say much about cell phone usage at that age, my boys didn't have them at that age, and neither do most of the 13 year olds I know now. MOO
Just speculation based on the fact that Dylan had not used his phone since 8pm Sunday night Nov18. Trying to make sense of it is all.
If we go by dad's statement as being true then here's a possibility...
Maybe Dylan's phone did get dropped around 8pm therefore not able to use it.
Wakes up dad's gone, can't use phone as it is broken. Doesn't have friends number's memorized so can't use land line and does try to hitch-hike as he doesn't want to wait around for dad. He grabs his backpack so he can stay over at friends as dad said he would want to stay at friends for Mon and Tues.(per interview with dad on KOAT.com)He even grabs fishing pole and leaves down CR500 heading south toward friends direction.
Here's the thing, the nearest RSO is only 0.5mi or 2mins down that street from dad's house! This RSO was busted by ICE for child *advertiser censored*. Dylan is alone and walking and passes this area fairly quickly and well...? IDK but I hope they are double, triple and quadruple checking that guy!
Also of note, there is a place called Chain Lakes right off that street as well only 1.7mi or 4mins from dad's house past the RSO. (Possible fishing spot?)
So maybe...

Even if it were required, doesn't mean everybody would necessarily get permit for it.
Some people will probably do it without a permit?
So MR would have planned to do errands. Dylan sleeping in was not planned MR stayed on his schedule. All my opinion .

Nite all
here is some more info about the area. What is called Bayfield consists of several communities, Gem Village, Vallecito and Bayfield proper. All given a mailing address of Bayfield because of the Post Office. If MR was to have taken Dylan to his friends on sunday nite he would have had to to drove quite a ways out of the way (assuming the friends lived in Bayfield proper. There are cut throughs on various dirt roads in that area to quickly get you to Bayfield. Especially if his intent was drop him off and then to go to Walmart. I personally have driven back to the Ute Casino to go up to bayfield to head east.
So if MR knew he was going back into Durango in the AM, why would he not dropped dylan off sunday eve at the friends (to make Dylan Happy) and done the Turkey day shopping on Monday while he is in town? Maybe 25 miles from Airport to Walmart maybe another 25+ miles back to home. As opposed to at the most 25 miles from Airport to home. I hope this makes sense.

To me, common sense just says what are the odds dad left him breathing and when dad came home he wasn't there? No signs of a runaway, no signs of wandering off in the woods?either he never made it to dads house or someone he trusted lured him out of there!
There are no signs of a struggle, right?
Dylan was going to be with dad for a week. There was plenty of time for the two to be together.
