So... does anyone have any predictions as to what he's going to decide to do? I think he's going to go "all in" and opt for a trial. He's a gambler, after all, likes the attention and this way he can stall (what I hope is) the inevitable.

Nothing can be predicted when it comes to him. I can't see JVDS wanting to do anything that would mean he takes full responsibility, especially considering how many people are watching around the world.

Isn't it something what it's come down to, the guy who started gambling at a young age, the big gambler who lied over and over about his first victim to get money, the guy who lied, cheated, scammed and stole to get money, murdering to get money, his last gamble will be on his own life. There sure seems to be some kind of Karmic justice going on here as well.

John Ludwick is a total idiot. Easy to see why he's a friend of JVS. He's been on NG before. I can understand the appeal of having the one person claiming to be JVS's friend that still believes he's innocent. But he came across as such an idiot the first time that it's hard to believe they actually asked him back.

He thinks he's some sort of media star now. He better be careful what he says or hire a lawyer as he might just find the FBI on his doorstep asking some questions since he claims JVS and him discussed emails re: the extortion attempt. Or maybe not... they may just figure him for the two bit punk he is.

GRACE: Did he ever mention where he got the money? Did he ever mention he was in the middle of a shakedown on the dead girl`s mother for $250,000 to name where the dead girl`s body is?

LUDWICK: I know he had money because he ran a coffee shop in Thailand. So he had some money saved for that. But after a while, his money started running low. And that`s when I guess the contact happened with that.

GRACE: What contact?

LUDWICK: That`s when I guess he tried to contact John Kelly or Beth Holloway and that stuff happened when he ran out -- started running out of money.

GRACE: Mr. Ludwick, why do you say he tried to contact them? What he tried to do was extort $250,000 in exchange for the location of Natalee`s body. It would seem to me that you would be concerned that he knew where a dead body was? If you knew where a dead body was, Mr. Ludwick, wouldn`t you tell police?

I agree. He seems like an "all in" kind of guy. Not to mention, he knows about the extradition bargaining going on right now with the US and he pretty much knows he's facing life in prison if he takes this aggravated murder deal so why not spend his days for the next few weeks or months in front of the world camera and see if he can scrounge up a few more "guardian angels".

The guy to his right and the one behind him are the taxi drivers who are also being charged in the case but are there as witnesses.

I noticed the wierd tongue flick as well and thought it odd at first. After re-watching a couple of times, I think he was indicating that he was hot as he began to take off his vest and jacket. I think he was trying to act kinda friendly (as if they were all in the same boat or something) but the guy turned away and wanted nothing to do with him.

That's what I got out of it anyway.

I would hope and pray that LE keeps an eye on this guy. IF he survives his sentence for murdering and dismembering his poor wife, he will most likely be on American soil and ....................well, he's NOT a nice human being, imho.

IF he comes back to the States, we'll probably be seeing his name again.

Edward Alvarez, lawyer for the family of the victim, told AFP that a guilty plea by Van der Sloot would most likely result in "a reduction in penalty from 30 to 29 or 28 years."

If Van der Sloot denies the charges, he would be go through a legal process that could make him subject to potential life imprisonment.
"If during the trial evidence arises that it was a robbery with death consecutively, he could be charged with robbery followed by death, which is punishable by life imprisonment," Alvarez said.

He disagreed with Van der Sloot's attorney, who estimated days ago that his client could have his sentence reduced by 15 years with a guilty plea.
"That's absurd," said Alvarez, who said a reduced sentence is "at the discretion of the court."

He also said Van der Sloot was unlikely to receive the kinds of prison privileges granted in the Netherlands because examinations of him determined he was a "psychopath" who represented a danger to society if he was freed.
