Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

[...]

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

[...]

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Anyone who has seen Gabby or has any information on the case should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-8477.

Mod Note:

We are starting to lose focus that this thread is about Gabby and the current search for Brian.

Mental Health: Only bring it into the discussion if it is a statement in media or LE reports. Do not expand beyond what has been provided to us regarding Gabby and/or Brian and mental Health.

Domestic Violence: Many posters here have stories. In our own personal ways, we all have stories. The challenge we have in these threads is the separation of our personal stories and the focus of the thread.

This thread is about Gabby's story.

As mods, we have hearts, we care about each of you, and it is hard to delete a post on thread that may include your personal story. However, we have to remind ourselves this is about Gabby's story. Please keep her the focus of the thread.

ADMIN NOTE:

Discussing info that is in MSM about the parents is allowed. Sleuthing out information related to them, just because it is publicly available is not allowed.

If you don't understand the difference, private message a Mod or Admin and we will help clarify.

Thread is Open:

Please acknowledge before proceeding

Emotions and frustration are running rampant in the thread and taking it out on others is not permitted. If you need a break, take a break. Continuing to engage in this fashion is not moving the conversation forward.

Of Note:
-Move on from bickering
-Let go of the domestic violence debates
-Stop bringing in mental health

Have a great day everyone!

So...the family is rounded up, grand kids in tow and we head for the campground for a smoresfest. Part of the jamboree is a pink, polka dotted elephant wearing a clown hat and neon red lipstick.
Comes the day when questions about this outing arise...and nobody at the smoresfest remembers seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, petting, riding, tickling or talking to or about the elephant. One member of the party has gone missing. Two members of the party are totally zipped. The other member of the smoresfest admits it took place - but saw no elephant.
Since the missing guy is a moot point and the two zipped up members of the soiree are, well...zipped up. The remaining member gives up lawyer naughtiness and a touch of "Family Feud". Still no elephant. The situation requires meat, but is instead showered with molecular-sized bread crumbs. Armchair analysts of all stripes seize the bread crumbs and dissect them...looking for an elephant. Ain't there.
The court of public opinion is a fickle thing that gobbles breadcrumbs and extrapolates the shadow of elephants in the ciphering out of them as they are digested and eventually expelled.
Result? Buttoned lips, a fugitive on the run who knows where and a snipe hunt as big as the invasion of Stalingrad.
Still no elephant.
The sobering truth is nothing of substance will come from the Laundrie side of this horrible saga. Everyone will have to wait while the excruciatingly slow process that is the legal system either produces a fugitive or winds down and enters the world of cold cases. In which case, patience will not only be a virtue, but a necessity.
Nothing wrong with being furious. Fury tempered with wisdom and patience is very effective stuff.
In the meantime, there's an opportunity to express compassion, feel genuine sorrow for a young life expunged, and educate our daughters and sons about the signs and dangers of trying to fix people who need every ounce of your energy for repair...and never get repaired. The slap or punch you take and forgive, could have you lying decomposing where only miracles can find you.
MOOing...

Very eloquently stated.

According to the law, anyone who used someone's debit and credit cards without prior authorization is a criminal, regardless of whether the people involved are in a relationship.
But when the added particulars in this case are strangling that cardholder until they're dead, leaving them in the wild, taking their vehicle to transport to the safe haven of the parents and then refusing to even let anyone know where the body of that cardholder is, it's morally and ethically reprehensible. There's so many victims in the wake of what is Brian, and very little, if any, remorse. That's why it's impossible to humanize the Laundries.

Omg this!

I don't think anyone is debating (or maybe some are idk) if using a partner's or spouse's card is wrong... if it's agreed between the parties that you can do it (despite what the banks say). I have definitely used my s/o card before, with his knowledge and approval. However, he is sitting under the same roof, alive and well.

Ignoring the circumstances of this case and strictly focusing on "a card being used by the boyfriend" is silly... I might go on and say deliberately obtuse.

(I'm quoting from the previous thread that closed mid-typing :) )

Does anyone think the Laundries are calling the FBI/Police/LE and begging them to continue the search in the reserve? It's an idea that's never occurred to me until this morning. Example: "Please find our son. We know he's in there and he might be hurt."

MOO

Brian Laundrie attorney Bertolino slams John Walsh after ID special on Gabby Petito case | Fox News

Fun war of words:

"I absolutely believe that his family is helping him stay on the run," said Walsh, who also hosts "In Pursuit with John Walsh" on ID.

Bertolino snapped back at such speculation.

"Dusty relics like that Dog and John Walsh need a tragic situation like this so they can clear the cobwebs off their names and give their publicity-hungry egos some food," Bertolino told Fox News Digital, also taking aim at Duane "Dog" Chapman, the reality TV star and real-life bounty hunter who entered the search for Laundrie late last month.

Through a spokesperson, Walsh said he had no comment on the lawyer’s attack, while Chapman issued a sharp response of his own.

"It’s ironic that Mr. Bertolino would criticize the people trying to find Brian Laundrie, unless perhaps he doesn’t want him to be found," he said

From thread #64:
I'm not saying Brian hasn't done something terribly wrong or that he has handled everything right, but...if I had put money into Gabby's account, and she had given me the pin number to use it, I would have used the account without the blink of an eye. Guess I have the makings of a common criminal.
I doubt he put his fair share into her account. He's a moocher. She was looking to the future and working hard on the trip. He was just in it for the fun. Spoiled, entitled little worthless ____.

The last line is extremely powerful. I wish I had you as my mentor/friend as a young adult.

It’s possible. And if so, then it makes it even more likely that he may be in there, injured or deceased. I wish there’d be a conclusion.

Oh my goodness!

Response to Kristie Alley, who inquired as to what was going on today:

The search crews are back at the Carlton Reserve today with a human remains detection K9. They have done this many times before though. Doesn't appear to be a sign of anything significant at this point. Spotty cell service here, but I'm going to try to go live soon.

it is an interesting counter-intuitive that a guy who seemed intent on keeping his actions a secret took no measure to conceal his cross country travels. using her credit card (not to mention driving her car) do not suggest someone covering tracks. Hanging out with his family for more than a week may have turned from waiting for the inevitable to formulating a plan (either for escape or suicide).

That said, the complete lack of effort to disguise himself or his movements upon the return trip to Florida seems to suggest either 1) he thought he would get away with it, 2) he knew he wouldn't, or 3) he didn't do it. It definitely doesn't suggest a likelihood of huge conspiracies, long term planning or a network of friends and confidants helping him hide across the country.

The longer BL is thought to be alive, the longer SB can keep billing the Laundrie family.
