NAPLES — Six yellow Peruvian lilies and a single crimson rose lay in the middle of Pioneer Road in San Carlos Park on Wednesday morning, the very spot where Tia Poklemba was found last week, moments before she died.
On Thursday evening, about 17 miles south of Pioneer Road, friends and family gathered in Naples, the city where Poklemba was born, to celebrate the life of a 25-year-old described as a “firecracker” with a compassionate heart.
There were, of course, moments of sadness and disbelief.

Sometimes waiting for an update is agonizing. I know silence a lot of the time means LE is being close lipped because they are close. . . but I just want to know what happened to this poor girl and that whomever did it is behind bars.

Police have identified a man in connection with the death of Tia Poklemba but are still looking for him.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed Luis Gonzalez, 22, of San Carlos Park was the man who was last seen with Poklemba on Aug. 8.

snip.... According to the sheriff’s office, Poklemba’s injuries appeared to be the result of a being hit by an automobile. However, evidence at the scene suggested the collision may or may not have been a traffic crash.

Confusing

This guy is not in custody and may have left the area

Before Gonzalez was identified, surveillance video was released showing a person of interest. Investigators say the man spoke with Poklemba at the Best Western Spring Resort Tiki Bar the night before she died.
Detectives also learned the man possibly owned a tan Cadillac CTS. Authorities found the car and surveillance video was also released. Tips led to Gonzalez's identity and his connection to the car in the video.
Now, Gonzalez is wanted on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality.
Investigators do believe that Gonzalez has left the Lee County area. They say the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

After media publicized pictures of the car and the person of interest, investigators received a tip that led to Gonzalez, investigators said.
A tan Cadillac CTS is registered to Gonzalez’s name.
Deputies recently towed that car from the Dowling Drive address.
Neighbors said investigators carefully scrutinized the car and covered it in plastic before taking it away.

The result of the follow-up investigation showed sufficient evidence that suggested Gonzalez's involvement in Poklemba's death.

Thanks, PrayersForMaura!

When they say the result of an auto collision...still want to know how that accounts for her specific injuries. I'm glad they have the guy and that there was evidence.

I hope they can find the guy quickly...I'm sure he knows now they are looking for him...

Luis Gonzalez, 25, believed to be in Mexico, has been charged in a warrant for manslaughter by an intentional act, a first-degree felony. He was charged in 2008 on a warrant for leaving the scene of a fatal accident, also a first-degree felony.

The charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident is not extraditable under the U.S. treaty with Mexico. In a January 2009 interview with the Daily News, Carr promised to up the charge to an extraditable murder count if Gonzalez didn’t turn himself in to authorities.

Basically, they upped the charge to manslaughter so they can have him extradited back to the US. They suspect that he is in Mexico with his family.

Thanks for the update, Tuffy. I was just thinking about this case recently. Hope they find this soon.

why did it take so long to up the charge? :waitasec:

A judge sentenced Luis Gonzalez to 60 years in prison Tuesday afternoon for the death of Tia Poklemba...

A jury found Gonzalez guilty of manslaughter in September for the 2008 death.

The then 25-year-old Poklemba met Gonzalez at a San Carlos Park bar before he offered her a ride home. Prosecutors said Gonzalez then ran her over three times and left her body on the side of the road - leaving her to die.
