I imagine they had suspect dna, which they matched to a familial tree to which Bryan would belong. Bryan is THE suspect but they still need to secure dna directly from him to confirm it’s a match to suspects dna.

Grateful for the technology avail to LE today, but don’t think it’s a stretch to expect LE to attain a warrant to search/access dna databases. I value my personal protections & don’t care to just hand them over, personally.
