'He has finally received justice': Gannon Stauch's family speaks out after guilty verdict

Over three years after 11-year-old Gannon Stauch was murdered in his Lorson Ranch home, Al Stauch and Landen Bullard say their son has justice.

“About three years ago, we were set up in a similar room giving you, giving us, the worst news that was imaginable: The news that our son was no longer alive. Now, I stand here today with some of the happiest news that we have waited three years for, is that he has finally received justice,” Bullard said.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Three years after an 11-year-old Colorado boy’s murder, a jury found his stepmother, Letecia Stauch, guilty on all counts.

A judge sentenced her to life without parole. FOX31 sat down one on one with Gannon Stauch’s biological mother, Landen Bullard, just hours after the verdict.

Bullard invited FOX31 into her El Paso County home. After three years, five long weeks of testimony and an agonizing weekend of waiting for this verdict, Monday was unlike any feeling she said she’s ever been through.

WATCH: Gannon Stauch’s mother says the boy ‘loved’ his stepmother

Forever 11 years strong! Gannon will never be forgotten.

A few hours after #LeteciaStauch was found guilty in first degree murder, a rainbow appeared outside of the courthouse. Today, the Stauch family got justice for their 11-year-old boy after waiting more than 3 years. Perhaps, this is a sign from #GannonStauch to his loved ones

Letecia Stauch will serve the maximum sentence for the brutal killing of her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon. After a jury found Stauch guilty of all charges, Judge Gregory Werner decided to proceed directly to sentencing.

Before handing down two life sentences, Werner called the facts of the case "the most horrific I have ever seen" and listened to statements from Gannon's family and others affected by the case.

The first person to speak was Stauch's former neighbor Nicole Mobley, who testified earlier in the trial about Stauch attempting to pay her to lie to law enforcement. "It's been hard, it's been heartbreaking. To finally see some justice for him and his family is incredible."

El Paso County Sheriff Issues Statement Following Gannon Stauch Trial Verdict

May 8, 2023 - 5:30pm
El Paso County Sheriff Joe Roybal released the following statement after a jury found Leticia Stauch guilty of murdering her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon Stauch:

“Gannon’s disappearance and the subsequent exhaustive search garnered local, national, and worldwide attention.

The outpouring of community support was overwhelming and an example of the heart the citizens of El Paso County have for one another, especially when tragedy strikes. Still to this day there are ribbons, signs, tributes, and blue porch lights across our community, for Gannon.

This case was arguably one of the largest in our Sheriff’s Office history, in both notoriety and depth of information collected.

To this point, it is important for me to acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the men and women of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and their resolve to bring Gannon’s killer to justice.

For each of you in the Sheriff’s Office who took part in this investigation, you have my thanks and appreciation.

SUMMARY WILL CONTINUE IN NEXT POST

April 26, 2023

STATE WITNESS # 56 - Dr. Jackie Grimmett
  • Forensic Psychologist with the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo, CO
  • Conducted second competency exam
  • LS claimed lost time and other personalities named Taylor, Tecia, Jasmine, Jasper
  • LS tested above the threshold for feigning; presented symptoms she didn’t have; was more competent than she wanted to appear
  • Diagnosed LS with Unspecified Personality Disorder with borderline and narcissistic features (she didn’t meet the threshold for a diagnosis of BPD or NPD); also noted a rule out for PTSD
  • LS complained about having nightmares and anxiety and mentioned being bipolar
  • Not appropriate for the defense or prosecution to be present during forensic mental examinations
JUROR QUESTIONS
  • Can compulsive lying be a sign of mental illness? No. Antisocial Personality Disorder, not mental illness.
  • Can a difficulty or inability to face evidence or be rigorously honest or face consequences be indicative of a mental disability? No
  • Is it possible for a person with a good upbringing to develop an anxiety disorder or DID? Anyone can develop an anxiety disorder. DID is strongly correlated with trauma.
CROSS FOLLOW-UP
  • Could a sincere belief that people are going to believe me despite repeatedly lying be delusional? More likely irrational but not crossing the threshold into delusional. Just because something is irrational doesn’t mean it’s delusional.

STATE WITNESS # 57 - Dr. Loandra Torres
  • Clinical Director of the Court Services Department and Board Certified Forensic Psychologist
  • Conducted first competency exam (along with another board certified forensic psychologist), as well as the sanity evaluation
  • Video clips of the sanity evaluation in 2022 shown to the jury
  • LS said she created the personality Harmony and let Harmony get molested by her stepfather instead of herself
  • LS said Taylor was her main personality, Maria is the protector, Victoria has empathy, Letecia is bipolar and “doing the most”
  • LS asked a staff member if they could tell when a patient was faking instability or mental illness

STATE WITNESS # 57 - Dr. Loandra Torres (testimony resumed)
  • VIDEO: clips of the 2022 sanity evaluation shown to jury
    • LS describes an accidental shooting when she shot someone wearing a cape and she later learned it was Gannon
    • LS believed she was in a psychosis and would wake up eventually
    • LS claimed Gannon wasn’t killed on the afternoon of the 27th but after midnight on the 28th
  • If LS had DID, there would be a lack of understanding, awareness, and memory
  • LS had no mental disease or defect that would impair her understanding of reality and showed the capacity to form intent

DEFENSE WITNESS # 2 – Dr. Dorothy Lewis (cross-examination resumed)
  • Says “it’s interesting” that her family didn’t see any signs of DID
  • Admits LS reporting Gannon’s absence at school could have been planning
  • Doesn’t feel qualified to conclude whether LS knew right from wrong when she put his body in a suitcase but concedes she had the capacity to know she needed to hide the body
  • Young reminds her about an email that she sent to Tolini saying they should drop the EEG request; she says she didn’t consider the withdraw to be permanent
  • Young reveals Dr. Lewis’s son was present during the evaluation of LS
JUROR QUESTIONS

What significance does the defendant giving enemas affect her relationship with Gannon?
If true, it’s sodomy. Repeated, unnecessary, unpleasant, and humiliating. It’s a common antecedent to sexual abuse experienced by those who develop DID. If indeed it happened to LS, it’s common for a patient to repeat the behavior as an adult.

Did the number of DID cases drop after the clinic at Bellevue was closed? It’s not been studied, but I’d say yes. If yes, why were they dependent on the existence of the clinic? It’s not the diagnosis that is dependent on the phenomenon, it’s that the recognition diminishes. It’s common for me to get calls from physicians who are familiar with it about how to diagnose and treat. There are not many physicians competent to make a diagnosis.

What is your specific training to determine if a patient is feigning or malingering? Having read the study, it’s my understanding there is no good definition or standard for malingering, as opposed to other disturbances, and is commonly used in courts. You’ll find the diagnosis is made more commonly in forensic cases than in others, but it’s not a well-defined phenomenon and you have to be a little skeptical when someone suspects someone of malingering. Especially when there’s a penalty involved, the person is more likely to be accused of malingering.

Did you do any test to determine if feigning or malingering was present? Yes

You said people with dissociative symptoms are suggestible. Then why describe her behaviors in front of her? It’s an art, in part, to be able to inquire about symptoms or signs without suggesting them but try to never go by what someone said. We must have data that antedates whatever we said. That’s why we look at things like styles of penmanship, behaviors noted by others.

If an MRI and EEG were not completed, how did you render your decision? What made it final? In my mind, the decision is still pending. I’d like to consult my neurologic colleagues and get more testing involved because it’s an open question. There is a neurological phenomenon that looks like this. Existence of psychosis is evidence, and I think you saw it. You’re not going to see a better example here. That she suffers from a psychotic disorder, and there can be little question. Whether DID is the explanation to personalities and violent repetitive acts can also be explained by other disorders. However, psychosis, there is no question that this is and was psychotic.

Do you have additional evidence that was corroborated through time? Because I was not permitted or able to interview these people myself, I have questioned some responses I got. There were people who reported to others the changes that seemed reasonable, but if I haven’t seen it myself and it hasn’t been documented… In this case, I had to rely on what other people said. What was very interesting was the finding that she called herself Maria at an early age, and that behavior was a core aspect of how she behaved.

DEFENSE RESTS

STATE CLOSING ARGUMENTS

  • Gannon told us everything we need to know through his autopsy
  • Finding the suitcase was divine intervention
  • Diagram of injuries on Gannon’s body
  • You don’t get to claim insanity when you lose your temper
  • LS asked a nurse if they knew when someone was faking it
  • Dr. Lewis recommended LS change her plea to NGRI
  • LS’s actions show judgment and reflection – the picture of Gannon asleep in bed, calling the school to report Gannon’s absence, moving her car before the murder, leaving his body in the car at the airport and renting another car to pick up Al, plants seeds (like the suitcase) in the midst of her lies
  • Legally insane people don’t act like that; they don’t have the capacity to know right from wrong; they don’t hide the body and act like nothing happened; they don’t lie
[summary] [summary]

DEFENSE CLOSING ARGUMENTS
  • There is no answer of motive
  • The killing happened in a psychotic rage triggered by something in her past; it was not a premeditated murder
  • She was manic and up all night not sleeping
  • Laughing with deputies right after she killed Gannon is proof of her dissociation
  • Her lies were completely irrational and not something anyone would ever believe
  • None of the doctor’s denied mental illness; it’s not important whether you call it borderline or DID – what’s important is that she was psychotic
  • Covering up the murder and insanity are not mutually exclusive
  • They aren’t asking for her to be set free or not held responsible; they are asking the jury to consider the mental illness and send her to CHMIP
[summary]

STATE REBUTTAL
  • To say LS was psychotic when she killed Gannon is a fantasy
  • LS hated Gannon and wanted to hurt Al and Landen; we know that because she searched “I hate my stepson” and she only has one
  • She wanted to leave Al before Gannon was killed – which does prove motive
  • Internet searches show LS was calculating, manipulating, and lying to everyone; she deflects blame and makes herself the victim
  • Everything she did in her life was to create chaos… she’s a story teller; telling fantastic stories is not psychosis – it’s who she is
  • LS doesn’t have a diseased mind and had no psychosis – Harley said it, Dakota said it, Al said it
  • Not a single doctor saw a shred of DID; even Dr. Lewis couldn’t justify her opinion when she was pressed on it

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A southern Colorado woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars, after being convicted on all charges in the death of her 11-year-old stepson. Letecia Stauch learned her fate on Monday, May 8, 2023, following a trial lasting more than five weeks. A jury then deliberated for eight hours before finding Stauch guilty on all four charges, including first-degree murder, in the death of Gannon Stauch.

11 News has continued to cover this case from the very beginning, when Gannon was first reported missing back in January of 2020. Our news crews were also in the courtroom for every minute of the trial, up until it’s emotional conclusion.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Less than two weeks ago, Letecia Stauch was found guilty in the death of 11-year-old Gannon Stauch and is beginning a life sentence in prison.

11 News anchor Grace Kraemer spoke with a woman who says she helped decide that conviction after hearing weeks of testimony.

After the Stauch murder trial, Grace received an email from a woman who said she served on the panel. She told Grace she wanted to share her side of the story on camera but did not want her name to be used.

The woman will be referred to as the juror in this story.

“I cling to the fact that we were chosen at random, but we were chosen for a reason,” said the juror.

A court has ordered that Gannon Stauch's biological parents will split the money from a life insurance policy taken out on him by Letecia Stauch, the woman convicted of killing him.

5/23/2023

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Tuesday a court ordered Eugene Stuach and Landen Hiott, Gannon Stauch's biological parents, to split the $25,000 life insurance policy that was taken out on the 11-year-old by his former stepmother, Letecia Stauch.

Letecia Stauch purchased the policy from USAA two years before Gannon's death and even tried to make her biological daughter the beneficiary on the day she was arrested for his murder.

Both of Gannon's biological parents have said that they did not object to the court possessing the life insurance money prior to the judge ordering the money to go to them.
